I will be in YHZ later next week. Are there any recommendations regarding differences between the Westin and Sheraton in Halifax?

Are there any recommendations regarding differences between the Westin and Sheraton in Halifax? doc Jul 9, 01, 10:57 am I have the very same question! Any recent stays in lovely Halifax by chance? Rolling Stone Jul 9, 01, 9:19 pm It's been almost two years since I've been there, but I liked the Sheraton Halifax over the Westin Nova Scotian. The Nova Scotian is done in the typical railroad hotel style prevalent in Canadian cities, but had fallen on hard times as development moved west away from the area. The area became seedy and the hotel fell out of favor with travelers. They were renovating last time I was town, but that doesn't help the location. Very much a group house. The Sheraton had a casino on the ground floor, but it's moved out now to the new building down the street. I don't know what they've put in it's place. I found it to have much better service, and the location is closer to everything you want to do. If it's raining, it's also connected to shpping and office building by overhead covered walkways. It's my favorite. Both hotels are franchises. Shareholder Jul 9, 01, 9:40 pm I agree with Rolling Stone, and coincidentally just sent doc a note to that effect when he raised the question in an email to me [did you ever finish that steak you took home from CM23, doc?]. The location of the Sheraton makes it the better choice. You can walk to just about any major attraction, and most good restaurants and drinking spots in Halifax from it's waterfront site on the edge of the museum/gallery strip. The pedway also helps in bad weather if you want to get to the shopping mall for food supplies, to the convetion centre, or just closer to good food and the Citadel. Also, the bar in the lobby is the last closing drinking spot in town. Last summer I spent a week at this property, and there was nothing but an empty space where the convention centre was. However, the whole hotel has just gone through an upgrading/rennovation, so something may be there by now. If you can, get a room looking out on the harbour. Enjoy your trips, Isle Traveller and doc. doc Aug 16, 01, 9:47 am Yes, I finished it at the hotel, thanks, Shareholder. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif And so I'm headed to the Sheraton, thanks. Anything else, anyone? Thanks again! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif maineflyer Aug 16, 01, 11:15 am The Sheraton is newer and closer to the middle of town. It's attached to the Halifax Casino. It tends to be more expensive than the Westin. The Westin is the old Nova Scotian hotel that was closed for many years. It was renovated as a Hilton with a new tower added around 10-15 years ago. The lobby and public areas are nice and the staff is excellent. However, I did not find my room to be up to the usual Westin standards in terms of size or quality (although I only paid $70US per night). Thursday morning free full buffet breakfast for SPG's. One more note, a brand new Four Points is opening in downtown in October. It will be closer to the downtown business district than the Westin. IsleTraveller Aug 16, 01, 9:12 pm My stay at the Westin went well. The staff was very courteous. The rooms were a little on the small side, but still adequate for my wife and I. The business centre has free internet access but it is only open weekdays (something like 7am-7pm). At this end of town, there is not much traffice. Special hint: you can park on the street right outside the hotel until 10am and save the $14 daily parking charge. Yes, there is a new 4pts opening just up the street in a few months. It is closer to town, perhaps 5 minutes. The central core would be another 10 minutes away. doc Aug 17, 01, 7:04 am Thanks everyone! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif "Thursday morning free full buffet breakfast for SPG's." Curious, just on Thursday mornings? Interesting! |
