Hi. I am planning on redeeming starpoints for a hotel in Puerto Vallarta. It appears that the Westin is the better hotel, but that the Sheraton has a better location. Has anyone stayed at these properties? Can you comment their respective desirability? A more central location is preferrable (closer to town and cheap eats, better beaches) but I am tempted by that heavenly bed...
They're both first class places. The beaches in town are "better" only in the sense that they're more active, not prettier. For a couple or family with usual American tastes, you can't beat the Westin. And it's easy and cheap to hop on the bus into town.
The Sheraton is closer to the action, but definitely not in it. It's a long walk to town, so a short hop on that cheap bus is what you'll end up doing.
I stayed at the Sheraton in February. The pool is very nice. The restaurants are a little overpriced. Your view probably would be oceanside, but my room also looked out on an undeveloped sandy lot next to the Sheraton. The plumbing was very noisy, though it probably depends on which room you get. The buildings are high-rise and the grounds are nothing to rave about.
Overall, I'd say Westin. I'm single and like to be near noisy, active, Mexican-oriented places with a lot of restaurants, so the Sheraton does it for me.
P.S. P.V. food has become more expensive in the past five years. Still beats San Diego prices I guess.
