Concerning, The Westin Edmonton as noted on the Hotel's Web page.

Please note: From July 28, 2001 to August 25, 2001 the hotel is sold out due to the World Athletics Championships.

It may claimed to be sold out but it's still possible to make reservations there if you really want. You may try the Starwood General Reservation line, or call the hotel directly. My understanding is that the hotel had an agreement with the Championship not to sell rooms to 'outsiders'. However, if everything fails, you can certainly make reservations with Starpoints if there is room available. I know that because I've already done it before. But take my advice, this Category 1 Westin Hotel is really a Category 1 hotel. Nothing impressive at all. Consider the Sheraton in this city, it may be a better choice.

Guava,
I must disagree with you in regards to the Hotel. I admit to not being very well diversed in my travels but I do remember that this was my first Westin stay and enjoyed it so much that I joined the hotel program and concetrated all future stays at Westins. Maybe it was the awesome customer service that did it, but I was quite impressed. Little things like that can really make a first impression with someone.

I agree with you that this Westin has good customer service. The staff is professional and polite. In fact, even I was just a Gold, I was first upgraded to Westin Guest Office room under my request (which they had no obligation to honor). I don't dispute their good service. It's the rooms and the building itself that didn't deliver. The hotel is quite old, the rooms are tiny and the furnitures are not up to the standard of most Westin hotels. That's why I said it was really a Category 1 hotel as ranked by Starwood itself. I also give most of my business to Westin b/c I believe they are better than the Sheratons. This Westin was not bad, but if you compare it to (for example), Westin Calgary, the quality of service is about equal yet the latter has much better furnished and bigger rooms. The Westin Calgary gave me a comfortable Tower Room which was so good that I can say it beat the room I had in Palace Hotel, San Francisco. Now that's something b/c Palace Hotel outranks the Westin Calgary but the Palace is actually slightly inferior in terms of room quality.
