Starwood Preferred Guest - Bad Luck!!!

Having had such a bad experience in the AMS Pulitzer, I was hoping that my stay in the Hong Kong Sheraton would be better but I seem to be cursed with bad luck! I arrived at the hotel at 2:00 PM (after 62 hours in transit - but that's another story) only to find my room not ready. I was told to come back in an hour or two – I thought great I’ll have an hour or two to stagger around Hong Kong in a sleep deprived stupor. When I did return to the hotel and check into my room I found it very basic especially for the discount rate of $250.00/night. Anyway, has anyone else had a hard time checking into international hotels before 3:00 PM?

No experience in afternoon check-ins, but plenty of bad experience at this particular hotel.
It by far has the most unprofessional management/staff of any SW hotel I've been to.
The concierge, for example, didn't know where the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong is. I had to find it on the map for her...I also ended up helping out another guest that the concierge couldn't assist. Gee, I could have gotten a job there!
The Gold "upgrade" offered to me on 3 of my 4 stays there was to room facing noisy Nathan Road - no Harbour view. The "upgrade" that I got according to the manager was to the SW Pref. Guest Floor. Next time, I stayed on the "regular" floor - it was exactly same room. The Pref. Guest floor is NO different.
Additionally, to make a toll-free call costs $4.50 US. THAT is outright theft.
I'll pay more to stay elsewhere. In fact, I'd likely sleep at on the sidewalk before spending another cent at that hotel.

WOW! Had a totally different experience 2 months ago.
Granted, checked in at 7pm. Was upgraded to a very nice, if not too large (HK, after all) suite. As a Platinum SPG, the front desk clerk, with the assistance from the Front Desk Manager offered me the choice of the suite or a room over-looking the harbour. Chose the suite for my 5 day award stay.
Didn't ask much of the staff, as I know HK pretty well. But, they were polite and helpful in all that I did request. The free breakfast in the lounge was certainly terrific.
Local calls were $5HK, about 80 cents US. Don't know how an "800" call could have been $4.50US . I found their phone charge quite reasonable, especially in that there was no 20, 30, 60 minute time limit.

I too had a reasonable stay in March… twice. The first time I was upgraded to a no-view, but quiet suite on the SPG floor. Nice marble bathroom and a plate of fruit and some munchies + water. The second time I was upgraded to a similar suite, but with two double beds. I called the front desk and moved to a regular room with a harbor view and a king bed. Platinum status gets you access to the Towers lounge and a very nice continental breakfast. I paid $132 and thought it was excellent value for the price.
