I'm new to SW group, they send me a gold card membership and would be interested in proper upgrade asking techniques. Just booked afew off season(May) nights, basic superior room, at Sheraton, NZ I would like the Deluxe upper floors or Tower. Should I show my card and ask to be upgraded authoritatively, or ask "IF" I can be upgraded, or just try to look needy. How does the experienced Starwood member have the most success being upgraded at checkin. Thanks for any tips.

I would be direct and just ask to be upgraded. Say it is supposed to be part of the benefits of Gold. I am not sure Gold benefits are for upgrading, but unsually the desk clerk can do whatever they think is best for customer and often do not really know what perks go with which card.
As I am Platinum, ususally get upgraded without asking.

I'm a measly basic memeber (I think my current balance is something like 86 points http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ). I've just asked when I check in and have been upgraded to deluxe ocean front in Maui on my two last stays. In both cases I asked if rooms were available in a specific building and was moved.
