On a couple of recent reservations, I've called before the appointed hour to cancel my reservation and was told by the agent that I had missed the cancellation deadline and the computer wouldn't let them cancel it.
This is despite the fact that, in both cases, I had a written confirmation that clearly indicated the later time. The second time, the agent could see on her screen the later time as well -- but the computer still wouldn't let her cancel it.
In both cases, they were able to call the hotel and get me a "courtesy cancellation". It worked out, but it took a while longer. I'm also concerned that I may get a hotel that doesn't do that.
FWIW, one was made through the Westin site and the other through Pegasus' TravelWeb. (Which also provides the backend for Sheraton.)
