Behind the glow many of us have been enjoying now with 25k bonuses due to intense competition may be now moving into a consolidation phase. MCIWorldcom and Sprint have been holding talks about a merger that would combine the two long distance carriers, according to todays WSJ.

Significant barriers that may scuttle the deal still remain however, while both sides have discussed a workable financial structure for an eventual deal in which MCIWorldcom would acquire Sprints core business for stock.

If you are thinking of swithing but have not so far, you may want to act quickly.

IMHO, I do not think that my former colleagues at the Justice Dept. will allow such a merger to go through. We (Justice) fought too hard and too long to deregulate the long distance monopoly to then allow the #2 and #3 players to merge. Neither is in financial trouble. Both are doing well. Combined, their market share would substantially increase concentration within the industry. I just don't see it.
