American Express Membership Rewards - Black card holders Hertz or Avis

Just curious which you choose and why if $$ are the same. Which company do you think you get treated better with.

It depends upon the location. I get treated well by both. Hertz usually has better weekend offers so I don't end up using Avis much.

I prefer Avis over Hertz. I book midsize or fullsize and end up every time with a two class upgrade! Only one class upgrade on Hertz. Just my 2 cents.

The extra three hour overstay at Hertz is extremely valuable on many two day trips. I frequently get in about 1PM from a 9AM departure and keep the car the next day until 5Pm for a 6PM flight home and only pay for one day. Nothing Avis does can touch that one. When that is not a factor, I use them both about equally, depending on the price and the location availability.

I've had quite a bit of difficulty getting them to do it automatically but the Hertz Centurion contract is that if you book a midsize they bump you all the way to Premium based on availability. I almost always have to have an argument to get it though.

I never enrolled in the Hertz program. I chose Avis and have been very pleased with their upgrades and service. However, the "overtime" benefit with Hertz sounds like an attractive offer that I may need to explore. :)
