American Express Membership Rewards - Amex Plat UK: 3000 MR pts for FlexSelect

Got a mailshot this morning offering 3000 MR points if I activate FlexSelect on my Amex Platinum. FlexSelect offers the opportunity to spread payment on purchases over £200, acting as a credit card with typical APR of 18.9%.

No intention of ever using the credit line, but 3000 points are always welcome...

The small print also says that to celebrate 10 years of MR, the points value of certain items has been decreased by 10%, details on the website.

The FlexSelect option has been there on my accoutn for some time now when I login to check my balances but it is unlikely to be offered to Centurion cardholders due to the large balances that we typically carry.

My online Centurion account allows me Flexselect. Not that I've used it, I carry enough on my other cards.

I think that in the US this is called Sign and Travel. A while ago Amex offered some points (1500?) if you signed up. It turned out that they randomly put stuff onto that part of the account and at the end of each month the total on the bill never indicated how much was needed to pay them completely. After some angry words with them they reversed the interest charges and removed this "feature" of my account. It was definitely NOT worth the points to sign up for this.

It is available to Centurion card holders but you have to activate it.

Well the largest single purchase I have made since I activated FlexSelect was £2960 but when I clicked on FlexSelect it said I had no qualifying purchase so I don't know where the £200 you quote comes from?
Perhaps it is that Centurion card holders have a higher threshold before FlexSelect kicks in?

The £200 limit is fairly extensively quoted in the promo literature, e.g.:

"All transactions over £200 will be itemised and shown in a FlexSelect section on your card statement..."

Like I said, I'm only going for the 3000 points - I mostly use my BA Amex card for spending and a lower-rate credit card for borrowing, so the actual facility is of no use to me.

I thought you'd only be considered for a Centurion if you paid off the balance in full every month on your card, therefore not carrying a balance.

A lot of people have an Amex whatever (take your pick) charge card they pay off every month plus a Visa or Mastercard on which they carry a balance. Amex would quite like to have both lines of business.

Oops me not thinking again. I'm an BA Amex monkey who pays it off each month in full. I don't have a chargecard so forgot to put two and two together......I'll get my coat

FGB you're right, but in the context of a bad payer, viz someone (not having FlexSelect) who does not regularly pay his entire balance by the due date.

Where FlexSelect is different is that it is a scheme that Amex will activate for you if you have a good payment history and as it is Amex who are letting you carry a balance forward, (at a very nice interest rate, I might add!) it is not viewed as a breach of the terms of your charge card agreement so would not affect eligibility for the Centurion.

I have an Amex specifically for the purpose of NOT carrying a credit card balance. Anywhere that won't take Amex goes on the Visa debit ....
