The American Express website says that the Costco card is free (no annual fee) with a paid Costco membership. I thought that having the no annual fee Costco card also included free Costco membership?? In other words, having the AmEx Costco card, I would save $35 a year on Costco member fees. Did the deal change recently??

You gotta it in reverse. First you gotta join Costco and pay the $35-$40 or whatever fee and then, if you wish, you can get a *FREE* Costco Plat AMEX which serves both as a cc and a Costco entry card.

I have the Costco AmEx card and pay one annual fee (on the credit card statement). I'm not sure whether it's billed as a card fee or a Costco membership fee but there has always been a fee.

Thanks for clearing this up! :-)
Another note. I believe you get the rebate in forms of Costco cash unlike regular AmEx Cash Rebate card. Depending on your spending level and pattern you might want the Blue Cash Card instead.
AmEx Costco Card rebate rate -
0.25% for the first $2,000, 0.5% for the next $3,000, and 1.5% for purchases in excess of $5,000.
AmEx Blue Cash Card rebate rate -
0.25% for the first $2,000, 0.5% for the next $4,000, and 1.5% for purchases of $6,000 and $50,000.
Everyday purchase (charges @supermarkets, gas stations, drugstores, and home improvement stores)
