I do not really understand the question.
If you want to use your AMex in Paris, it is OK as soon as you want to purchase in a minority of shops.
But we mostly use here the Visa, and secondly the mastercard.
If you want to get money from ATM, just forget it; There are 7 ATM that accept Amex in all the country.
I heard about the DAB (ATM) from CCF (a french bank) to be able to acept them, but I am not sure it is already done.
If you want to minimize your change fees, go to the little shops downtown paris around Opera (Metro station OPERA)or La Bourse (Metro Station LA BOURSE),
§§§§§ EXCEPT Amex , which is outrageaously expensive ¨§§§§,
and change your dollars to euros with usually less than 1 per cent commisision (only cash, card not accepted).
You need to compare, and not just not take the first one.
Amex cards are widely accepted where tourists visiting Paris need to use a card.
Hotels, restaurants, all department stores, car rental companies, the french railways (SNCF), some cabs, etc.
All ATMs from Credit-Lyonnais and some other banks accept Amex cards.
Only french cards (card numbers starting with 3749) are limited to Amex owned ATMs only (the 7 Felis is talking about) due to a problem between the french GIE Carte Bleue and the banks (a long long story ...).
All shops accepting the french Carte Bleue should also accept Visa, Mastercards, and cards with the Maestro sign as well.
