Please excuse this morbid post but I am truly curious. If there is a plane crash or other common carrier that is covered by Amex for insurance does Amex check to see if any of the passengers paid with the American express card and have insurance coverage or do they passively sit and see if anyone makes a claim. They don’t seem to mention this in any of their materials. If they were passive on this issue I bet they would avoid a lot of payments/claims. I would like to think that Amex and other insurers actively work these cases and search for loved ones or beneficiaries.

In general an insurance company usually does anything possible NOT to pay money.
SO I bet in case you claim for a liability, it´s up to you to make the first move.

On the other hand, why should they spend money for contacting airlines and checking passenger lists, just to find out for example, that there weren´t any of their customers not on board the plane ?!?!?

I would like to think that single person with no children would not need to leave a note behind every time they fly like:
"To parents I have taken a trip and charged it to my amex please be sure to file a claim if i die."

It may sound ridiculous, but I enrolled in the $1Million policy through AMEX Platinum, and have given my mother a copy of the coverage, just in case I am onboard a fatal flight, she can file a claim for me. I have her listed as a beneficiary.

How else would she know, if I didn't tell her. It isn't as if AMEX would voluntarily offer her the $1 Million in the event of my death.

I have a list I leave behind "just in case"

It does detail all the insurance coverages I have including - Bought ticket on Amex - see their insurance."

Not really morbid just a by product of frequent flying life.
