I was an Amex customer from the early 70s to the mid-90s, when I ditched them for Diners. Now I'm back. One of the great things about Amex used to be (in the days before widespread ATMs) that you could bring a personal check into any office overseas and cash it. Is this still the case? (And if so, does it apply to Starwood Amexes?)

It stil exists, but I believe this benefit is card-specific.

It's actually true for every card. However, limits for Centurion, various Platinums, Golds and basic cards are substantially different.

Thanks, folks. I have a Starwood Platinum, but that's not the same as Amex plat, obviously. I doubt I would even use this feature, but it's nice to know it's there -- I wouldn't feel the need to bring any backup travchex at all.
