American Express Membership Rewards - Centurion card - sometimes better to be Plat?

Weird situation:

Browsing the Amex site yesterday and noticed some reasonable London Starwood hotel deals that had a footnote along the lines of 'Amex Platinum only'. Called Centurion to book these rates on the assumption that I would qualify for all rates, Centurion and downwards. Apparently not!

Advice was that this does indeed only apply to Plat holders. If I wanted to take advantage of the deal, I would have to generate a (free) subsidiary Plat card from the Centurion account and then use that.

Seems like a lot of work for Amex here, but I've gone ahead and done this just to prove a point. I'll see what happens when I call to cancel the card immediately upon receipt... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Most people in Europe don't know what is a Centurion card. In some shops, they take my card and check the Amex logo twice on the reverse side ...

Even Amex people don't know : I had to buy some travellers cheques by Amex in Paris (rue Scribe), and the girl didn't know that the issuing fee should not be charged to Centurion cardholders (like Platinum) !
