When I first signed up for the card, I was also given a $2,000 limit. I eventually learned that this was due to the fact that I was an existing Amex customer. The representative suggested that I transfer some credit from my existing account into the new one. I did and, thus, now has a higher limit on my card.
I received a $2,000 limit on my card, too, and after calling Amex, they increased my limit to $10,000.

I don't know what the max limit is, or how to get it, but I do know it is well over 20k us$.

I'm not even sure that they have a max limit - it may be based on your level of charges and ability to pay. I've had the card for about 5 years and have always had an $11,500 limit - more than adequate for my needs. Afang, I would do as Wayneb did and call to have it increased.

Yes, had mine increased from 4500 to 7000. Which is perfect for my needs. I guess I had more credit open since I canceled my Gold Rewards Plus card... :-)

I've found that I can't get higher than my $25,000 limit without sending in the past 2 years of personal or business tax returns. Although I LOVE Starpoints, I don't like AMEX enough to work that hard, or share that much....
Aloha
Recently acquired this credit card.
I could not believe what I was hearing from AMEX when they told me that although I made payments on my bill that it doesn't open up any credit until the next billing statement. I can make charges up to my credit limit, pay the charges in full immediately with an online transfer of funds, and still have no available credit until the next closing date of my billing statement.
What kind of credit card company is that?
Here's how you can increase your credit limit within the first 30 days after your card was activated.
Call Amex New Accounts 1-800-962-7227, and ask for a "re-evaluation of your current credit line".
You should have an answer within 48 hours.

Thanks for the good info.
It was weird today...
Called in to activate my card (just got back home), very nice lady told me all about the benefits of the AMEX Plat...
Then..to my surprise, the card got denied at Khol's when I tried to purchase some candles...it was kinda embrassing
Called AMEX again...the agent explained that the reason that the card did not go through is that the card was never activated!
Anyway...he activated the card again...and also activated my wife's.
He also gave me the phone # for the credit increase...
Not sure what the first agent did when she said that she activated my card...and why do I have to call another number to get a credit incrase? I am sure CITI have just one number...

Ok... I called the 800-AXP number...and asked the CSR to increase my credit...well after seeing my account info...she has "concluded" that my account is not qualified for a credit increase..therefore, i have to wait for get this 6 months! I was astonished to hear this...
I told her that i have very good sources told me that i can increase my credit within 30 days of opening a new account...she said she has never heard of such thing. So she took my "application" over the phone...and asked me the same questions when I applied for the card...how come they don't konw this info by now...it's beyond me.
Then she said I should be getting an answer from their bank....what bank??? i thought AXP owns a bank and even financial services
Anyway...this is getting weird.

There was a reason why I said you should call the New Accounts dept., rather than Customer Service dept http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Or, simply call CS and ask to be transferred to NA. Should work either way. Good luck!

I have had an AXP account for about 7 years (1994). I too had charged close to my credit limit and wired them an early payment. They refused to release my available credit until the next billing cycle. I could see if I sent a check and they wanted to verify funds, but this was a wire transfer. The CSR said until the statement cuts, regardless of form of payment, my authorizations would be declined! Understand I've never missed a payment on any of my cards, EVER, somewhat conservative on credit usage, and have maintained a FICO score between 780-810. In addition, I awlways pay my bills in full. The CSR stated, "it's like this for everyone." I was (and still am) furious.

I guess i'll have to call the NA dept and get this thing straight...i mean 2k is not worth anything when you are traveling.
