American Express Membership Rewards - USA car hire CDW for UK plat holders

As previously discussed in this and other forums all UK issued Amex Platinum cards
have the benefit of covering Top Up liability insurance (SLI) for Car Hire in North
America.
I have today discovered that for a flat fee of £85 per year this coverage can be
extended to cover Collision / Loss Damage Waiver (CDW / LDW), apparently this fee
is added to the annual fee and is good for multiple hirings during the year providing
no single rental exceeds 31 days in length.
Has anyone taken advantage of this in the past?
If so, are there any comments on it?
It seems to me that it is good value and will pay for itself in just over a week.

Hi Nick,

Yes this is true. I have upgraded my level of cover for my Platinum Card. It is done on an individual card basis, so if you have additional cards on the account you have to pay £85 per card.

Basically you are paying to be upgraded to the level of cover Centurion Cardholders get. For another £15 per card you can pay to have the minimum excess taken off aswell.

Point to note it is paid for the members year cycle, so if you pay your annual fee in July, don't take it out in June as it will only last for a month, get it done in line with your annual fee charge.

If I remember if the fee is paid for a card on the account, then that cardmembers spouse and any children under 18 0r 21 if in full time education are covered without a need for putting them on your account. I have had to do this as I am the primary Platinum cardholder and the rest of my family has supplementary cards on my account except my youngest brother who is not old enough for an AmEx card so would not be covered by std Platinum insurance but he is now as I paid the fee for my Dad's card which is on my account and he is now covered; very unusual situation, AmEx had never come across it before, but then I can imagine that they don't have many 20 year olds with Platinum Cards http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks,
Richard
