American Express Membership Rewards - AmEx Uk giving MR Points for Places not taking the card.

In my statement this month, was a MR update, with an offer of 500 Points for telling AmEx about stores/websites in the UK that do not take AmEx or have asked if you could use another card.

I called them and discovered that this is 500 points per store/website. I then reeled off a long list of places, and now have a healthy 11,500 point bonus for one phone call.

Call UK customer service and quote code UKMR1.

Thanks,
Richard

AMEX has done the same here in the US, but I don't think it was quite as generous as far as multiple bonuses. I received a letter from them and got 500 or 1000 points for giving the name/address/phone number of two stores that didn't take AMEX.

I am consulting my AMEX source... Check back in a day or so...

Richard, you mean I can just ring Amex up with a list of any old shops that don't take their card? I thought your card had to have been refused to qualify?

My source wrote me the following:

"Here is the run down:

It was offered only to Gold card Members (300,000) from 3/20/00 to 5/31/00. It
included either 500 MR points or a leather bag. Sorry, but it is no longer
running"

Hope this helps...

Hi James,

Yes, you just ring AmEx up, go through to Membership Rewards dept, quote the UKMR1 code and give them the list of outlets\websites that:-

a)Don't take Amex at all
b)Do take AmEx, but asked if you could use another card
c)Do take AmEx but charge you a higher card comission fee

I've had at least instance of all of the above!

Thanks,
Richard

Richard: Know if this is applicable to locations outside the UK?
Whilst not every bread 'n butter outlet store throughout Europe can be expected to accept Amex, I've now recently many times come across reputable restaurants that do not accept it, but would rather I use Diners or MC.

That sounds about right (time frame and points), but I got it too as a Platinum ... probably Gold and Platinums were offered it ...

It also was 500 total for two (maybe three) establishments, not 500 per establishment ...

Well guys, it will be a bit difficult in US. In UK, except for "major" companies, none of the small stores accept AMEX. Go and rack up those points.
