you can transfer amex points to USAIR, then combine with American miles for an award...but I think it's only domestic. ALso, you can put them in TWA...in advance of the merger.

Just a word of warning - transferring your MR points to TWA in hopes that it would eventually end up at AA is a risky proposition at this point, as there is no guarantee AA would win that bidding war.

probably has to do with corporate agreements, etc.
I have wanted to use AA awards and when I last checked
I can transfer the miles to US and request an AA award through them - they are booked somewhat differently than booking directly with AA and sometime require more miles (5k more for same itin using US to AA vs AA direct on a trip from sfo to caribbean)
Cannot use US miles for AA awards on any but AA metal (unless they have changed this)
