A couple of weeks ago I received a copy of Travel and Leisure magazine in the mail even though I hadn't remembered subscribine to it.
Today when I received my Amex bill I saw a charge for 35 dollars. In checking the magazine I saw it was published by American Express Publishing Co. I had to call to ge the charge removed. I would never have subscribed to it. I must have not checked some box saying I did not want. Anyone else with the same experience?

I've been getting FORTUNE magazine for 2 years. As far as I can tell, I've never paid for it. I called the 800 number to have my name removed, but they refer me to the credit card company. I've checked all my back bills, but can't see that I've been charged for it. NEVER...I repeat...NEVER fill out those magazine subscription forms on the back of the payment envelope. It's better to lose the miles/points that to try to use them up using a magazine subscription.
This also happened with a Citibank Visa I once had. I cancelled the card after a year, and 3 months after I cancelled the card, they sent me a bill for a magazine subscription. I had it removed, but it's a lot of trouble and waste. FORTUNE goes from my mailbox into my recycling bin, unread.

In some states, eg Virginia, you get to keep the unsolicited goods. Your credit card company will easily comply with your request to have the charge removed if you mention you did not request the mag's

BUT, are you absolutely sure you didn't sign up ?? You might have entered a sweepstake or checked a box on your bill or some other trick !!

BTW, Travel & Leisure is a pretty decent read IMHO !!

TRAVEL AND LEISURE magazine has always been an unadvertised "benefit" of the Amex card. As you note, it is published by them, and snuck into the cardholder package, but you are billed $35 a year for the subscription. It's a bit like the way you a hit for $8 every time for insurance when you buy an airline ticket on the Amex card. How do you think they make their money? Knowing something about the publishing industry, Amex's almost captive audience of cardholders ensures an affluent subscriber base for this publication, and it quite rightly should only cost about $1 an issue to cover postage and handling. Editorial is more than paid for based on the revenue from ads. But Amex always squeezes the maximum dollar from their members, until they get caught.

That said, it is not the worst general travel magazine, but certainly not the best either...
