I lurk on this thread pretty hard, so I don't think this has been posted yet...but...

AA is now charging AS elites for "preferred" seating. Anyone else noticed this?

AA tweeted at me to inform me of a change of policy, but I was wondering if anyone has further insight into this.

As an AS 75K, I think I'll choose Delta over AA any day of the week, knowing I have the chance to get upgraded and at the very least, sit near the front of the plane. It's to the point I'd probably take a layover over a direct flight.

Last night on a 3 hour delayed ORD to LAX flight I sat in row 42 on a 67. Ugh.

end rant

Is your issue similar to this one where aa tries to charge everyone who tries to assign a seat over the phone:

it's somewhat similar...but these are flights that i've booked myself. AA says that the agreement with AS has changed, but I have yet to hear anything on the AS end...i talk to the social media team over there often.

sounds like this might be a new issue.

AA has preferred and preferred plus seating. Preferred is for sale but free for elites and preferred plus is for elites only.

Were you trying to select a preferred (green on AA.com) or a preferred plus seat (purple on AA.com)?

Is it normally automatic when you purchase a AA ticket to get the seats for no charge? I am only seeing fee for seats.

Well I'm confused. Some of my reservations I can longer choose preferred or preferred plus seats, at all. Can't even see the purple seats. Another one I can still choose either of them, for free.

Very disappointed if they remove the better seat benefit. :td:

I can pick Bulkhead/exit row seats no issues. Both Preferred and Preferred plus. It's a one way between BOS and SDF. I also see a big banner on the seat selection that says where you sit is your choice as a premium or full fare customer even though my fare is nowhere close to being a full fare.

AA was having computer glitches for the past couple days. Are people still having issues with seat selection?

AA was having computer glitches for the past couple days. Are people still having issues with seat selection?just read an article a few minutes ago. Evidentally thats the least of their problems. In the midst of a chapter filing it appears that you should avoid AA like the plague...not that I dont already but cancellations and delays have surged as flight staff tantrums have surged. But if they want to go down that path of me me me mentality they will find themselves like a lot of the country and be on the unemployment line when AA has to liquidate half the fleet and forced to merge with a buyer for mere pennies like TWA did with AA

Still seeing problems with AA flights as MVP Gold.

I've booked two AA flights recently, the first I can select the green preferred seats, but have to pay for them. The second I booked on AlaskaAir.com - when viewing the reservation on AA.com I could see the green preferred seats and there appeared to be no charge for them, but I couldn't select one. I called AA and they offered the seats for > $100 and insisted that there was no agreement for seating for MVP Gold and then after investigating told me that actually, they couldn't do anything with the seats at all and to call AS. I called AS and they were able to change and confirm my seats and said they'd had lots of problems recently with AA seat reservations.

AA told me on twitter in two different replies that firstly only their elites got access to those seats and then that AS elites did too. AS on twitter said they'd contact AA and get some clarification about what is going on. I pointed them to this thread too.

did a dummy reservation the other day to price it out and see what seats came up. Purple seats didnt show up at all...green seats were $25

i talked to AS on twitter yesterday and they mentioned that AA is having reservation system issues and that they are aware of the problem and are "working on it" although there is no timetable given.

in any event, i usually try and fly on Delta when the choice is available, this just further cements that.
