Any opinions on the Marriott Coronado? I have a vacation planned there over a holiday weekend and I have read some pretty negative reviews about it from various websites -- i.e. it needs updating, stained carpet, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I've never stayed there but I've heard terrific things about it

Thanks -- I was fairly concerned because two people who work at the hotel told me that they never heard of Fodor's. They also seemed quite surprised about any negative comments that may have been posted on travel websites on the internet.
Coronado Marriott has been one of our favorites, and there is quite a bit of commentary on it if you want to do a search, 100% positive as far as I can remember. You may need to search the FT Archives too.
We haven't stayed there in a while, but the last time we were there, the hotel had a lot of rooms being renovated. It's possible the negative reports have to do with being put in pre-renovation rooms.
The unrenovated rooms were perhaps a tad worn in the fabrics, but in personal experience, they were huge, clean, comfortable, and had great bathrooms, separate vanity areas, balconies, and more. The hotel used to be a Meridien, and I thought the Provençal-ish fabrics were charming even when worn. It's definitely not a cookie-cutter place. The view of the city across the bay is fantastic.
I expect the easy answer is to ask about renovations and make sure you get a re-done room, although I would think that by now it's all finished.
Never having heard of Fodor's scarcely seems to me to correlate with folks not be able to do their jobs. I've found it's practically impossible to find an unfriendly, and unusual to find an incompetent, service person in SD.
My favorite thing is the little boat that goes from the Coronado Marriott over to the Marina Marriott. It doesn't run very late, but you can take the real ferry back, and it docks 2-3 blocks from the hotel.

Thanks. We don't have a great rate -- for what we are paying I do expect a little luxury. It's a blackout weekend so no points can be used.
I would just hate to go there and be disappointed. Certain reviews at Fodors.com had me quite concerned. The hotel has done little to alleviate these fears. When I mentioned these poor reviews, that's when two different people told me that they never heard of Fodors. The Coronado used to be a Fodor's choice but subsequently has lost that rating and I was trying to figure out why.

Stayed at this resort in Dec. It was wonderful! Great corner suite with terrific view of bay. Food was outstanding - breakfast buffet and dinner. Service in the bar was somewhat lacking, but that's the only fault I found with the hotel.
Be sure to walk to the Italian restaurant nearby for an outstanding meal. You'll need the walk back!
Have a great time!

Stayed there about 10 years ago when it was Le Meridian and thoroughly enjoyed it ... with one minor expection.
Our then-7-year-old daughter was having a delightful breakfast on the balcony when a seagull swooped down, grabbed a sausage off her plate, and sped away. She was NOT pleased. Forewarned is forearmed!
