Looking on Priceline costs are currently running at around $60/day for a main stream company in Aug 13 for a full size vehicle. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a decent deal.

Did you mean Aug 13th of 2013, Sept. 13th, 2012 or something different?

I did a quick orbitz check of orlando for 7 days starting on Sept. 13, 2012 and could see as low as $60/week by Payless for their smallest car. For full size, Economy car rental had the lowest with $80/week.

So I have to assume you want different dates than Sept. 13th as prices are much, much lower than your seeing or Aug. 13th, 2013 as I'm not sure that most car rental agencies will even let you book that far out.

In checking out some rates for Aug. 13, 2013, I noticed some rental agencies will provide rates that far out (and some don't). If that is really your date in question, I'd guess that the rates will come down some a couple of months from now once the less expensive rental agencies put their rates out there (i.e. Payless, Economy, etc.).

If you're talking about August 2013, it is way too early to get a good rate. I use Hertz and the closer it gets to my rental, the lower the rates become. I've managed to cut quite a bit of money from my rentals in the last 2 weeks before my departure.

National does the same. They offer specials 2 weeks in advance.

BUT - depending upon when you want to go in August, it may be tough getting a really good rate, but you still will get lower than $60 per day.

If you work for a company that uses one of the major car rental companies, see if they allow you to use their contract rate for personal use. If you can, often those rates are fairly decent. You can make the reservation using it, and then wait to see if they go lower.

That's what I usually do. I book using my corporate rate and almost every single time, I end up cancelling it and booking with one of the specials offered by the car companies.

A standard or full size will be your best bet. Like I said, you have plenty of time. I would start looking in earnest in May or June, and then check daily in August.

Don't bother with PL yet.
Monitor Hotwire (I think they have a TripWatcher feature to monitor the price) for the dates and vehicle type until a week prior. A good rate should develop. It is peak family/van time period before school resumes so maybe not the cheapest but should be cheaper.

You can book a cancellable reservation at one of hte agency while you monitor Hotwire. You have to wait until 330 days in advance before you can obtain a quote from Hotwire.

August prices in Orlando should be low. It is low season. I travel to MCO pretty much weekly for business and about half of the time I get cars for $12-18 a day. And they are not small... They all fit 4 people but not sure about the suitcases. I had Ford Focus, Fusion, Kia Optima and a Kia Rio at that price. I do use Dollar and I am an "Express" rental member (just a signon thing, no pay). They have lots of Ford Crown Victorias that can be had from $20-30 a day or so (either as a "premier" car or as and "compact or better"). These can fit 6 and more than 4 big suitcases. Pretty good deal in a kind of a classic american car that is there no more...

Good luck

The upside to getting a car reservation directly from the agency of your choice is you can generally update it to get a lower price. I'll book a car for future trips via Avis, and check 1-2x per week to see if things have dropped for my class of car, or better, if a higher class is suddenly cheaper, and make the change at that point.

I know a lot of people like priceline for cars, a car is a car after all, but for this far out getting directly from a rental company is a better idea. August is quite a long time from now and getting locked in on a higher price is not a particularly good idea.
