Mostly a rant, I guess, as I was bamboozled by their website to book them instead of AC (no bag fees, more pitch and bigger jet, and both have IFE).

Just got onboard my flight with the movie already picked out thanks to their website and ... NO SCREENS!!

...?

 and fuming...

I guess you encountered the "nearly" part as WS advertises that they offer seat back IFE on "nearly" all of their Boeing 737's.

It's all a wash however as a frequent complaint among AC passenger is nonfunctioning IFE so you might've boarded AC and had it not working.

Rant over -- my bad. Went back to the website (http://www.westjet.com/guest/en/travel/basics/inflight-services/inflight-entertainment.shtml)and saw the "nearly all". Big mea culpa for overlooking it; for once everything was disclosed properly ^. Truly a baseless rant...ouch!

Otherwise really liked West Jet. Great seat pitch, excellent and friendly cabin crew, a snack was provided with the drink. ^ Will definitely book them again, hoping to get one of the "nearly all" IFE-equipped aircraft but prepared if I don't.

BTW, never had an AC IFE not work (on the E90) ... maybe was just lucky!

PS Anybody knows what "nearly all" means quantitatively? 90%? 75%? 50.00000001%?

- 3 aircraft (all 738s) out of 99 do not have IFE.

- However there should have been tablets with movies preloaded available for a small fee.

Wow; that's a 97% overall rate; must be very unlucky!

However, if www.airfleets.net is correct, the 73H subfleet is 17 strong so the chances of getting a non-IFE equipped 73H are 18%.

No tablets were available on my flight (SFO-YVR)

There probably were no tablets available on that particular routing as it is taking on average about 45-60 mins just to get the tablets and headsets distributed! That would not have left a lot of time to complete the beverage and snack service, especially if that particular aircraft was on the fuller side!

The 737-800 always operates on YVR-SFO, so I guess this particular route is always without IFE.

Tablets are sold on flights over 3.5 hours.

I just flew a round trip to SFO on Westjet from YVR- both planes had IFE. I was, however, not impressed with the selection. 4 channels of pre recorded shows, none of which were on demand or any good.

It's not that it's a long flight and I need a PTV to entertain me, but when you get on thinking you'll have some movie choices or tv options and find you're out of luck, it's annoying. I heard ALOT of complaints from people around that.

Oh man did I read the website completely wrong! I was under the assumption that you could watch any of the movies for free. Well, I guess I'm lucky I'm going back on AC!

Incidentally, it just dawned on me that the aircraft that had no IFE looked completely brand new. Is WS getting new aircraft without IFEs? Seems quite odd but the 73H interior (carpet, seats) was definitely no more than a year old and it had the new Boeing Sky Interior.

I have read elsewhere that WS is not installing LiveTV in their new planes, and eventually will be phasing it out altogether, in favour of some other form of IFE.

Our latest three 737-800 aircraft (tails 817-819) are all less than 9 months old. I believe we get another four 737-800 in 2013 and they too will not have LiveTV installed. We are in the process of determining what our next system will be and it will most certainly not be LiveTV and will have internet. If I had to take a guess, I would say the new system will be announced in mid-2013 for a fall installation.

My westjet IFE consists of a macBook Pro with plenty of movie titles and photo-editing software to tweak my recently taken images ...and I'm a happy flier !!
