China - SFO-PEK-HGK Immigration question

Sorry if this sounds quite silly, but I'm an Asian traveler newbie.
Do I need a Visa connect at PEK? Will I even have immigration there or just until I get to Hong Kong?
thanks

You don't need a Chinese visa to pull this off, but there are much nicer ways to go from LAX/SFO to HKG (CX or SQ).

Thanks for the info. It's a UA award flight. I only wish those carriers were offered!

OZ is available from SEA on 11/19 in Y and C (2 hour connection at ICN), and I believe US still flies PHX-SEA. You can also do a single connection in ORD if you depart on 11/22 (Y only, sadly).
This is the site I use to research award flights (completely free):

I did exact route a year and a half ago (also award ticket). Just make sure you have the boarding pass for your CA flight. Follow the signs. There should be airline staff to guide you if you get lost. You go through a mini passport control. They'll stamp your boarding pass. The CA lounge is pretty nice. Biz class is decent. The seats are like U.S. domestic first. They offer Western and Chinese meals and a whole separate menu just for tea.
