Thailand - Who can recommend a hotel in Sukkothai?

I'm thinking about visiting Sukkothai. I went years ago and thought the ruins were fascinating. My husband has yet to go. I stayed in a truly dire hotel when I was there. I'd love to find something better. Air conditioning would be a nice start. Any thoughts?

When I was there for Loy Krathong a couple of years ago I stayed at the Tharaburi resort. It is quite close to the historic park. It seems to get fairly mixed reviews on tripAdvisor, especially the more recent ones are complaining about maintenance issues. There aren't a ton of choices which is surprising given that Sukhothai is a World Heritage site.
I stayed in one of the Grand Deluxe rooms which is quite a bit of puffery from a name standpoint. The a/c worked. There was a small fridge in the room as well. I recall it being a little dark and the bathroom light fixtures had a lot of dead bugs in them which definitely needed a cleaning. The floor was concrete as I recall. The breakfast was not memorable. Overall I thought it was just OK, but like I said there wasn't much to pick from close to the park. Make sure you also visit Si Satchanalai park

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I find it curious that in a town with such a remarkable historic site, there is such a dearth of even mid level accommodation.
Make sure you also visit Si Satchanalai park
I have not heard of it, and appreciate the suggestion.

I stayed there with my parents two years ago. Two rooms booked but they only had one for us the first night. Aesthetically pleasing but the place left a lot to be desired in terms of breakfast, management and mosquito control.
It has a great location however and there aren't many places to stay in that area outside of cheapies. We had a great local dinner midway between the park and Muang Sukhothai one night, I'll look for the resto's card when i get home.
I mention the resto because there's not many decent places to eat if your style doesn't include the local market or guesthouse restaurants. The former I like, the latter not so much.
I have not heard of it, and appreciate the suggestion.
You can also check out Kampaeng Phet which is located within the provincial capital of the same name. Si Satchanalai is out in the middle of nowhere. Both are a good addition to Sukhothai if you like the history of central Thailand and you have transportation.

How feasible is it to rent a car and drive ourselves? We rented a car in Chiang Rai and drove to the north, then to Chiang Mai. Roads were good. Is it that kind of driving?

Yes, pretty much, easy driving. If you want to just head in and out of this part of Thailand, you can consider flying into Sukhothai (PG) or Phitsanulok (Nok Air). Phitsanulok used to have more rental car places around (i.e. Budget) while Sukhothai was sparse...not sure what the situation is now.
I second the notion to get to Si Satchanalai on the same trip, it's not that far north of Sukhothai.

I have extended, adopted family in Phrae ( 100 mi. NNE of Sukhothai) so drive between Bangkok and Phrae, and in/around the area. Driving and roads are fine but I prefer to limit driving to daylight, and try to avoid driving in torrential downpours.
Some family members have friends from Sukhothai, I asked them for some links to hotels/resorts:

Great tips as always, jiejie.

FYI, the flooding over the past few days in Sukhothai has been very, very bad. Family friends report 50 cm.

I just saw a helicopter news fly-over in Sukhothai, the flooding looks horrible.
Also note that train service to the north has been interrupted by sink-holes/landslides near Lamphun.

Oh, my. How unfortunate for residences of the area.
My trip is in 2013, early in the summer. I hope that's not the rainy season or I'll need to rethink this part of the trip.

you should be OK then. The flooding (for the last few years anyway at least) happens now and into October. And last year into November. And December in some places.
