I have a trip to Brazil planned for later this month. I will be flying on TAM for my domestic flights. I have flights originating in GIG, SSA and GRU, do the check in agents weight carry ons? I will probably be travelling with a roll type carry on.

Thanks.

You can get some info on this thread in the Brazil forum:

Most of the time I have not had carry on luggage weighed, but it happens ever now and again. Recently I have been doing the online checkin and printing the boarding pass and going straight to security. YMMV.

Yes. I got hit in MIA with a $200 third bag charge ($150 + an emergency $50 mad dash to buy the cheapest rollaboard at the shop across from their check-in counter), because my 20-inch hardshell rollaboard weighed too much. I had both my "go 3 days with lost bags" personal stuff and 4 cameras in there, along with my laptop, and it was overweight by their ridiculously low 5-kg (11 pound) total carryon weight.

Meanwhile if you are Brasilian you can bring on 2 or 3 huge, heavy bags. And then hit me in the shoulder and head with them walking down past my seat, with full impunity.

If the flights are full TAM does sometimes weigh the carry ons, especially on domestic flights.

In my experience, they do weigh carry on luggage fairly frequently. Up until 3 years ago, I flew JJ quite often. On a full domestic flight, overhead bins were often half empty as they were very restrictive with carry-on bags. Frankly, I thought it was a good thing compared to what goes on in the US these days.
