she had a return flight lax-lim-eze for today but couldn't make it on time. I have limited info on the ticket.
the phone Rep is stating 1000 dollars to change the flight.
are there any options for us?
EDIT: she has a restricted ticket that was ticketed with a travel agent, so I can't do anything online
there are one way flights with a different airline for $800 or a round trip for $400 more
LAN is saying that if we don't pay the penalty today and change the flight, this half of the flight is completely lost

Buy her a r/t on another airline and tell LA to FO...and then dispute the charge. If the TA doesn't have an imprint and signature, they will be forced to eat the charge by LA and you will owe nothing because the TA didn't follow the correct security banking procedures.

Just buy her a new ticket, either OW or RT. It is a better deal.

How can you dispute charge for a ticket which was half used?

There's zero basis for a dispute. The pax missed the flight. This will all be documented and OP will lose a ton of money. This couldn't be worse advice.

The only "option" other than buying another ticket is to plead for mercy at the ticket counter. Did she actually show up late? Or just not show up altogether?
For those who suggest that the OP's MIL try and screw the TA or the airline for the OP's MIL's error, this is shameful advice. Neither did anything wrong. Prior to flight time, she might have been able to pay a change fee. This is reminding me of the guy at Costco last week who returned a food item that he already ate 80%+ of from the tray. Yet, worse....

You might want to take a look at the fares rules for the tix, just to be sure you are getting the right response...

Not to worry - Unlike Costco, neither air carriers nor TA's are that stupid. People who abuse chargebacks on major items get "fired" by their CC issuer (bank). Not what signature on charge slip has to do with price of beans. That's been out for 10 years.

The change fee might be that high because of fare difference so the ticket could be more useful if used at another date.

Why go through this hassle? Just break into the TA's office and rob the place. It's no different ethically, and requires much less paperwork.

+1
and a tix in the future might find the same fare class so you would only have to pay the change fee, depending on the fare rules on the tix you have
and buy a rtn tix in the opposite directions to solve you immediate problem and match up

well, I am getting mixed info from LAN on this.
yesterday, when we realized the flight had already left, we called instead of going to the airport. We were on the phone with LAN for 2.5 hours, after getting a new flight + giving CC info. We gave the email address to get the confirmation, that is when it hit the fan and the lady said she couldn't do anything over the phone, to go to LAX.
When we asked until what time was the counter open at LAX, she said that it was currently closed (6 pm PST) and to go early today in the morning. We got there at 8:30 am, no one showed up until 10 am, and the guy who was there basically told us that this portion of the ticket had no value and that she would have to buy a new one-way ticket.
He said that we should have come to the airport yesterday and I asked why the CSR on the phone wasted 2.5 hours of our time if that is what we needed to do.
Long story short, he said we were SOL and that a new ticket needs to be purchased.
I am looking into that now (they offered a flight for $2,000, which is retardedly expensive) but I guess my only other question is. If I find a round trip from LAX - EZE - LAX can she use the second half of this ticket to fly back LAX - EZE at some future date?
Because according to LAN, this is basically useless now because this is all done after the plane left

What does it say about post-flight changes in the fare code rules of the tix you have... it is relevant to answer.

I have no idea how to get that information. All she has is a printout with out fare codes or rules and got this from a travel agent in Argentina
EDIT:
She had a boarding pass with the ticket number
This is what I pulled from lan.com
EZE - LIM - LAX - VLWLE706 - Ticket Flown
LAX - LIM - EZE - SLWSP708 - Ticket Available
