I am currently booked in Y on a United Flight from SFO-BWI next week. The UA website shows 8 open First Class seats and it would let me upgrade for 7,500 MP miles. Unfortunately, all my miles are on US. I try to do a Star Upgrade on the US website and it says no seats are available. How can this be? Are there any suggestions on how I can upgrade with US miles?

UA MP upgrade availability =/= UA *A upgrade availability.

1. Try to find someone who has both US and UA miles and trade miles with them.
2. Buy UA miles.
3. Upfare.
4. Hope for a TOD UG.
5. You can book SFO-BWI on US probably for cheaper, and have your Y itin instantly upgraded to O.

Before you go do anything, are you certain that there are 8F? If by any chance you are relying on the seat map, it means slightly less than nothing. Could be booked full of paid F with seats not selected. Unfortunately, you need UA elite status for the instant UG.

Seriously, check the US fares in full Y and you can sit in F much more easily.

Thanks for the responses. Yes I am looking at the seatmap on United. I would normally fly US, but this is on a Friday and United will get me back to BWI with a 3:30PM departure. US would mean taking the redeye, and getting home Saturday morning.

You cannot go by seatmap. You have to either do dummy bookings on united.com or check flightstats for fare availability.

I would just check different routings on US - SFO-DCA, SJC-BWI etc. There is SFO-BWI with 1:40pm departure that gets to BWI at midnight.
