Hi there,

I will be flying from Manchester to Amsterdam, then I'll have about a 5 hour wait before travelling on to Taipei, I was wondering, would my luggage automatically be transferred through or would I need to collect it at Amsterdam?

thanks a lot for any guidance.

Are you travelling on a single ticket? If so, the answer is yes, your bags will be checked through to your final destination.

Are you travelling on two separate tickets? (i.e. MAN-AMS on one ticket; AMS-TPE on a separate ticket). If so, it depends on the airlines involved. KL to KL would be OK; KL to CI would also be OK, as they are both SkyTeam airlines and you should also be able to get both boarding passes when you check-in at Manchester; KL to BR might however require you to collect your bags and re-check them at AMS, as I don't know if KL interlines with BR.

Thank you very much for your response. I am travelling, MAN-AMS on one ticket; AMS-TPE on a separate ticket but BOTH are KLM flights.

Just let the agent know at the bag-drop desk in MAN know that you are flying onwards to TPE and ask for them to check your bags through. Have both tickets ready; they will need to see your onward journey.

Beware, also, that you may be required to pay a higher UK APD when you do this, as check-in agents at Manchester airport (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-diamond-club/1376993-new-apd-regulation-tk-scam.html) have been reported in the bmi thread as recouping the long-haul APD, as apparently required by law, when a passenger reveals that the short-haul destination is merely a stopover and that their final destination is actually a long-haul destination subject to higher APD.

Please report back and let us know if APD becomes an issue for you. Fingers crossed!
