View Full Version : LH old first vs. UA Global First?

Short version: which one is better, non-retrofitted LH F or UA Global First?

Longer version: I am currently booked to fly SFO-ORD-AMS in UA Global First and then onto MUC in LH J to connect do MUC-SIN in SQ F. However, I only have 50 minutes to connect in MUC, so any significant delays, and my SQ F trip is basically gone (it's an award booked during SQ reservation system upgrade shenanigans).

I'd like to change the initial segments to be SFO-MUC in LH F, to simplify routing, avoid misconnects, and try LH F for the first time. So far no space has opened up, but there are alternatives, such as SFO-ORD-MUC or SFO-CLT-MUC, though with LH F segments A340s with the old F cabin.

Hence, the question at the top..

Have you checked this thread?
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-mileageplus-consolidated/1336511-usa-fra-lh-f-ua-f.html

SFO-MUC has been oerated by retrofitted A346s on most days during the last month, but not ORD-MUC or CLT-MUC.

Yep, exactly why I'm going to try for SFO or LAX to MUC, but wanted to know about how the old LH F was.

Thanks for the thread link.

IMO, the hardware in UA new F quite a bit nicer than that of old LH F, however LH F seat is just fine. Old LH IFE, not so much, but that's not terribly important to me.

However, as soft product on LH is so much better than UA, I wouldn't hesitate to take it over UA. Throw in reduced chances of connection problems and it becomes a no brainer. And don't get me started on UA's current operational problems.

^^Have to agree here unless IFE is super important to you - more important than caviar and nice food (if somewhat esoteric) and real service in a still very comfortable, wide seat. LH OF is still a good product - UA has a long way to go to match it in terms of soft product IMO.

I'd do it just for the connection - you wouldn't want to mess with that gem SQ reward as you won't get any changes for that fare.

I personally still would prefer the old LH F over UA F.
The LH seat is wider, has more space. It has a few bumps and is not completely even, but I can sleep better in these seats.
Service and food on LH is significantly better and the crews are nicer. Especially on the very long UA flights the crew looks more like on a retirement home outing - sometimes you ask yourself if the wheelchairs in the jetway are for passengers or for the crew.

It's funny cause its true (-;

Seat width is about the same on LH old F, and there is not more space, there is absolutely ZERO space to store anything other than overhead bins on LH old F, whereas UA new F have multiple compartments at the seat.

While I agree thats its not exactly a storage marvel, the room inside the armrest is good enough for at least a small laptop / iPad / books / magazines / smaller items though

Sometimes being an LH elite (as per FF# in record) on UA F metal results in almost zero service! :td:

Maybe it has something to do with this, although they didn't look that old...:

However, probably the FAs fawning on specific pax (probably non-revs) in the F cabin was the case!

Thank you all for the feedback. Going to try and change my outbound to be on LH F on Sep 6, but concerned about the possibility of the strikes continuing until then. Any idea what the chances of that might be?

UA F = Lufthansa C with a nicer seat and media system.

On LH old F,
there is a lot of space to store even a laptop if you lift the armrest, a sliding drawer at the foot of the seat that can store several items, a shoe compartment in the front of the armrest,
and an eyeglass storage compartment.

So not exactly "no space".

Agree. Having been on both, I'd take LH for the food and service, especially if the routing was better.

Cheers

It has nothing to do with your FF affiliation. The service in UA GF is very democratic, it is equally bad for everyone :D

I disagree. LH C seat is much worse than UA F seat, which is much better than LH old F seat.

I'm flying FRA to RIO in Lufthansa First. A340. Does anyone know if this is retrofitted or the old first?

All A340s based in FRA don't have new first. Only ex-MUC A340s have new first.

:) I know. Flying from Delhi to Rio. Luckily the Delhi to FRA portion is the new 747 8. Just a little bit of a downer to go from that to the old one. The best LH first is actually on the old 747 where you get the bed and the seat. I liked that even better that flying LH A 380 First
