WestJet Rewards - WestJet to start Port of Spain service

Strange that WestJet hasn't formally announced this destination, but it is bookable. Also strange that they'd start with daily service, when most Caribbean destinations start once or twice weekly.

Thank you for the info, this is very interesting! I might fly there. :-)

I'm surprised that it is a daily connection. That is very convenient, but is the market large enough? Could there be feeder flights from WestJet's US partners (AA, Delta) to Toronto?

BTW: From Port of Spain one can book some of the cheapest scheduled flights: 24 USD one way to Tobago, fees and luggage included. There are many flights a day on Carribean Airlines, but they are very well booked. Travel time is 25 minutes, I believe.

From what I understand, Caribbean Airlines charges "an arm and a leg" for the same route (YYZ - POS) and the flights are often full. Westjet could very well fill their planes on a frequent basis to this destination given the large Trinidadian population in Canada/Toronto.

Not to mention that is a Y fare.
That flight also has another good purpose.

You are referring to the Trinidad <-> Tobago route? I tried to book business on the Caribbean website, but no luck.

What is the "other good purpose"?

Be interesting to see how well Westjet manages to do on this route, especially with the 737-700. As I understand, AC, on the A319, had to bump passengers on a fairly frequent basis when they ran it. Simply to get the weight and fuel numbers to work out.

I am finding this option very attractive but am concerned over a number of items.

Number 1) is the "pending government approval" . . . I suppose they are assuming it's a sure thing since they're selling seats.

The other area of concern is it is so isolated (relatively) from the rest of the WJ network that it would be a long wait to have a replacement plane flown in if there was a mechanical problem. . . otherwise pretty attractive all things considered.

Is this a full service flight or is it a stand-up only service for large Canadians?

Unless you are paying for business class, even Westjet's new seat pitch is identical, or perhaps a little more than Air Canada's A319/A320 flights!

The "pending government approval" message is no longer displayed. Is that a result of WestJet's computer issues or has the permit been granted?
