Credit Card Programs - Avoiding annual fee for 2nd year of credit card

I have an Citi AAdvantage Visa and a Chase Sapphire Visa that I got mucho signup miles for with no annual fee for the first year. Both are near the end of the free initial period, and of course I don't want to cough up ~$100 each just to keep them for another year. I've heard people say they were offered some kind of incentive when they called to cancel a card -- is there any chance they may offer to waive the fee if I tell them I intend to cancel? Any tips on how I should play it when I call to get a decent retention offer?
Thanks,
Os

Of course there's a chance. You won't know until you call though.

Play it cool man...play it real cool. Then show them the razzamatazz!
Ok, actually...just call and say you're cancelling because you don't feel it's worth it to pay the annual fee. Pretty sure retention offers are spit out by a computer in front of the CSR, so your level of sauvity shouldn't matter as to what, if any, retention offer you get.

Odds are good for getting a retention bonus on the Citi AAdvantage card; not so good on the Chase card.
Check this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/899591-citi-retention-offer-reports-all-cards-93.html) for more info on retention bonuses offered on the AAdvantage card.
