United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - Ear Bud Rules on Comutaire

Really simple question:
What are the rules for ear plugs at take-off and landing on Comutaire. If a pair of $1 sponge ear plugs is legal for take-off on a Q-200, why is a pair of $100 noise obstructing (no electronic switchs, etc) ear plugs not legit? Is it up to the discretion of the FA? (who is always right on a plane ;)) Is there any standardization of rules?

Just nitpicking. It's CommutAir and Q200 doesn't exist. First Q was in -400s then there were doing it to -300s.
Please don't take it personally but I had to do it :)

It's up to FA discretion to interpret it, but you aren't supposed to have anything in/around your ears that would prevent you from hearing the instructions of a FA. Most FAs on any carrier won't say anything about earphones/earbuds, but especially on planes that don't have gate-to-gate audio an FA might say something.

Thanks for the info. However, why are ear plugs ok but ear buds not if what you say is true? What you are really saying is that it is up to the whim of the FA. That is fine if that is the reality.

There most certainly is such a thing as a Bombardier Q200. They fly them out of CLE all the time.

Like I said, it is pretty much up to the FA. However, obviously having earbuds in when the plane provides no audio and all electronic equipment is supposed to be off is more likely to get a mention by a FA.
As for earplugs, the earplugs they provide to international C & F pax in the amenity kits only block a moderate amount of sound, allowing you to still hear the FA instructions. You can buy really good earplugs by yourself that will block out almost all sound, but the airlines won't provide them.

Who flys them out of CLE? Not Commutair. If they tell you it's Q- Dash flight, they use it as advertising gimmick. Bombardier didn't put any hush kits on -100 or -200.

Bombardier (http://www.bombardier.com/en/aerospace/media-centre/multimedia-library/details?categoryID=L3-Bombardier%20Q200%20Aircraft) seems to think they do!
