Chase Ultimate Rewards - Chase Ultimate Rewards ticket cancellation

I am not sure where to post this, but I could use some help.
I booked a $2331 ticket for my husband to Australia, and now he cant make the trip. I have to cancel. But, according to Chase Ultimate Rewards, I can not cancel, only exchange-in his name only.
My question is this:
Does anyone know if I can rebook ANY ticket and then get a refund on that rebooked ticket? This involves two airlines-Qantas and United.
(I have to rebook by Oct-and flight must be flown by May 2013).

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this situation.

Chase paid (with US bank notes) for the ticket(s) you have. They are no different than any other ticket, and so the fare rules of the ticket govern any changes you make. Since any ticket to AU for under $5000 is almost certainly not changeable without a fee, you are out of luck.

The T&C of the ticket you bought will tell you if it is refundable, exchangeable, etc. Chase UR is just the agent you used to do the booking. They also must abide by the ticket's T&C which are dictated by the airline. If you purchased a non-refundable ticket, you cannot get a refund. Look at your ticket's T&C. They are on the bottom of the ticket receipt ( and you should have looked at them before you bought them). $2331 is not a very expensive ticket. Chances are it is not a fully refundable ticket which usually carries a price tag of $4000+.

If your tickets are non-refundable, then all you can do is exchange them as Chase has told you. Did you buy cancel-for-any-reason trip insurance? You can also get a refund thru them if you bought non-refundable tickets.

...rebook ANY ticket and then get a refund on that rebooked ticket?

If a ticket is non-refundable the value cannot be used to purchase a refundable ticket. (i.e. If you choose to apply the value to a ticket which would otherwise be refundable it will carry an endorsement noting that $2331 is non-refundable.)

Call the airline and see what they will allow.

Only on the first rebooking. After that there are ways to get the value back from a fully refundable so then it can be used by anyone instead for the original passenger only on the 1st rebooking.

Or you can roll it to fully refundable beyond the May 2013 deadline until your schedule allow you to use the value up.
