Hi all,
I LOVE my Red Ox extra small aviator bag - even though its "XS", its huge enough for the light traveler and is super high quality but super cheap. I have 2 of them now. I recently went on a 2 week trip with just that bag. My problem is not capacity, but weight - at a certain weight it becomes awful to hold it with straps. i've seen small comments around the web about people who modified it to have backpack straps or a sidestrap, and I was wondering if people would care to share their experiences and even better, some pictures of how it looks?
Thanks!

Hmmm thats cool! Pictures are kinda small and hard to see exactly how everything "fit together".

That mod is for an Air Boss. MUCH different from an XS Aviator bag. I'm curious to see how your mod works.

I haven't yet made a mod :-( I was trying to get some inspiration and see if anyone else had done it.

Not quite the XS, but the Small with D-rings and a strap added: http://onebagger.squarespace.com/blog/2012/5/10/redoxx-aviator-with-d-rings.html. Check the comments, however, because one of the posters reports modding an XS in a similar manner.
I have the Extra Small as well but haven't yet felt the need to add a strap. Packed only with clothes, one pair of shoes, a very small toiletry bag (about the size of a 3-1-1 bag), and some tech accessory gear (but not a laptop/netbook), I've been able to keep the weight manageable. I supplement the XS with a second bag, with a shoulder strap, for my tech, including my laptop or netbook. That setup works really well for me since I can leave one hand free for working computer screen kiosks for checking in or pulling cash or a credit card out of my wallet.

lwilder, thanks for the great link, it was just what i was looking for!
your description of clothing is similar to mine, but i find that it usually ends up just a MITE heavy for, say, moving from bus to airport to hostel and back again. I rarely take my laptop, but if I do, its definitely too heavy long term.
My dream bag would be the size and quality of the XS (with the full around zip), with one pocket and straps.
Basically like my other, extremely simple black Eastpak backpack, which I have taken on month long trips and to which other travelers, with enormous backpacks, shake and wonder in awe.

We use the Aviator bags by Red Oxx (usually the mesh) for hauling equipment and they work well. Have never noticed a weight issue so have not done any modifications.
What we have noticed is that they are nearly impossible to destroy! They have outlasted many more expensive bags.

I tend to load my XS up with heavy stuff I don't want to check, primarily electronics, medications, and food. The most I've gotten it up to was 17#, but usually I have a 22" roller along with it and I can sit it on top. Otherwise, I'm probably using my Tom Bihn Brain bag, which I've stuffed up to 26# for a Virgin Blue flight from Melbourne-Hobart.
