so admittedly I'm a freq flyer but I do like Amtrak from DC -NYC. I've noticed, though, in probably the past year that when I try to get the AAA "discount" on some routes it'll actually increase the fare then give me a "discount" off of that. I'm confused by this b/c I don't remember that being the case some time ago - you'd get a AAA discount off of the lowest fare as I recall? any thoughts/ideas as to why that's happening? thanks.

It's probably a 14-day advance purchase fare?

That fare is not combinable with any other discounts. So, when you try to use a AAA discount, it bumps you up to the standard discountable fare.

Maybe that's what's at work here?

That's why I rarely get to use a AAA discount on Amtrak.

OP here. yup, that's prob it. I tend to be quite the planner so it would be entirely reasonable that it's, at least, the 14 day advance. Thanks! maybe I shouldn't plan so well ahead...........

On a related note, the AAA fare would be refundable, but the 14-day one is not.
