I'm kind of new to USAir so please bear with me...

I bought a ticket for a friend. Now I would like to upgrade my friend to first class using some of my miles. Is this even possible? Thanks in advance for any information.

Yes, it's definitely possible.

Upgrade inventory comes out of the same fare class as First Class award tickets. So, you can check availability on the US website by starting the process of booking a first class award ticket on that specific flight. If you see first class availability at the LOW category, that means there are also seats available for upgrade using miles. Then you would need to call US to process the upgrade.

If you don't see availability, keep checking, especially within 7 days of travel. More seats sometimes get opened up.

For non-elite members there is now a charge for the privilege of using your miles for an upgrade. Details for both points and $ required can be found here (http://www.usairways.com/en-US/dividendmiles/programdetails/upgrades/mileageupgrades.html).

wow I have not checked the upgrade process in a while but it is very similar to American Airlines which is based on miles flown.;) Prior it was just a a flat 10,000 miles in each direction

15,000 miles on US , now it's based on miles flown.
