New York City - What's going on with hotel prices in the first week of October in NYC?

What's going on the first week of October in NYC? Hotel rates seem particularly outrageous, even for NYC standards! I refuse to spend $300-400/night for a 4 night stay, when we'll barely be in the room!

I noticed that as early as 27 September - but then again welcome to Manhattan!

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say opening of the UN general assembly followed almost immediately by fashion week...

It's autumn in NYC. The best weather there is. Hotel prices are usually ridiculously expensive but don't blame the UN. The UN General Assembly is usually finishing up by October 1. They begin early in the 3rd week of September.

I would recommend finding hotels in Jersey City, NJ. They are much cheaper and you can take the PATH to WTC in 6 min and east village in 9 min.

Hotels below are 3 ~5 min away from the PATH station.

Candlewood Suites Jersey City
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Jersey City
The Westin Jersey City Newport
Courtyard Jersey City Newport

Thanks for the advice. I'll consider Jersey City, the only problem being we're flying in and out of JFK.

In that case, check out Long Island City (Queens) hotels. I just did a quick search on the Choice Hotels website for random dates the first week of October, and I got rates of about $150-$160/night. The Verve is particularly nice - big rooms, comfortable beds, compares quite favorably to boutique properties in Manhattan but far cheaper due to the location.

LIC will also be a good choice for getting around, as you're only a couple of blocks away from about half a dozen subway lines at Queens Plaza/Queensboro Plaza. You can get into Manhattan in about 10-15 minutes. The location also puts you in an excellent position for JFK, as you can take the E train from Queens Plaza to Sutphin Blvd and then jump on the Airtrain to JFK.

I would second LIC as an alternative for Manhattan. There are more transportation options (train) and closer to midtown. The OP should also try Hotwire or Priceline for the LIC area but check the area map (on Hotwire) before taking an offer. Priceline lets you choose what areas to bid on.

Excellent! Thanks for LIC advice. Sounds like this may work out after all.

I plan on being in NYC for 4 days during the second week in October and found the prices also to be in the $300-$400+ range, especially around Times Square.

We weighed getting a cheaper rate in an outlying area and time spent commuting in versus a more pricey rate with the convenience of being able to walk everyplace. I think we'll bit the bullet and pay a bit more to stay near Times Square.

Does anyone know if any good deals for hotels in that area?

Thanks in advance.

Second for Verve in Long Island City; we're coming in for a weekend on September 29-October 1 and that's where we're staying for $183/night. (Although we have business on the UES, so the location made sense.)

In Midtown, on my own dime, I like Club Quarters (assuming you belong to an alumni association, company, club or other organization with contracted rates.)

When presented with very high rates, always check the Javits Center Convention Calendar.

For the first week in October, there are two shows - the Search Engine conference and Interop (for corporate network engineers).

Neither is a blockbuster in itself. but together, plus factoring the general fall surge mentioned by Analise, makes for tight room availability.

Fashion week is over after 9/13, and the UN by 9/30.

THe Verve looks great... but I find it crazy that they don't have one single room that will allow 3 people?

I'm seeing the same insanity around early November. Granted the Marathon is at the 4th but rates are ginormous as early as a week earlier.
