Asiana Club - Asiana to start PDX passenger service?

Asiana seems to be carrying a ton of cargo out of PDX lately on their new freighter service. Cargo service has already been doubled. Started off 3x/week 747. Now has been upped to 6x/week 747. With such strong performance could this materialize into passenger service, thus restoring nonstop passenger service between Portland and S. Korea? Would also create one stop service via ICN to a plethora of Asian destinations from PDX.

Sounds very speculative at this point. I guess the only reason for them to do so would be to add underbelly cargo. Passengers flying out of PDX usually go either through SEA, SFO or LAX for their transpacific flights on other airlines, so I don't see any reason to add it from a competitive standpoint.

That said, I would love to see this happen, as that is a route I could conceivably make use of. I was thrilled when LH started their unusual CGN - PDX direct route a while back, though last I check I couldn't find any flights for that anymore.

I think OZ just started cargo into DFW recently.
I don't know about PDX, but hopefully, this may turn into passenger service into DFW as well.
I've noticed on KE flights out of DFW, the plane is usually jam packed.

Asiana cargo does not service DFW.
PDX would be a good candidate for A330 service PDX-ICN.

Considering SFO and SEA which are all served by OZ are not too far away from PDX, I don't see a reason for this. Personally, I think OZ should just operate ATL-ICN which is another route that is serviced only by cargo.

I believe the the OZ cargo flights stop along the way at another city before coming/going to PDX. So even though the cargo loads appear to be good, it is not 100% being loaded from PDX. Passenger wise, what *A members do they have at PDX for connecting that SEA,SFO,LAX do not already provide.

Passenger and Cargo is 2 totally different business segments within an airline.

Cargo is more profitable as well. :)

I started a thread about route expansion (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/asiana-club/1249327-asiana-us-routes-expansion.html) about a year ago. Since then, has OZ actually added any US destinations?

My vote is for IAD, since it's a *A hub already so good connections. The downside is it's already served by KE so maybe there's not enough room for both.

As for PDX, the *A activity there isn't huge and as another poster mentioned, the cargo and pax parts of an airline's business are drastically different.

Actually, it is.
Just because you don't know about it, it doesn't mean it's not true.

Not listed on the Asiana Cargo website nor has it been announced in their press releases. I'll believe it when I see it.

Back on topic...

Glad PDX has almost daily all-cargo nonstop service to Asia now. Should help companies immensely that need to get cargo to Asia ASAP.

No way, no way. Portland can barely support service to Tokyo (Delta) let alone Seoul. It's just too easy to fly through Seattle, and now I can book one ticket PDX-ICN using Alaska and Asiana. Asiana is just not that big to open a market that's questionable. It is true that this area has a great many Asians (I believe mainly Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese), but Asiana usually goes where the Koreans are or into an area that's distant from one of their other markets. I would think Denver, Dallas or Atlanta would be next in the USA. I understand the Atlanta market has worked out very well for Korean. Also Canada - seems to me that Toronto would have an excellent chance.

Just because it's being reported, it doesn't mean it will be true.
