I need to get to SFO at around 8 AM on Labor day - BART will not be running that early.
Any suggestions for something less expensive than a cab? I'll be on my own with no luggage.

Uber runs about $10 less than a cab, but you can't book it in advance and who knows how many cars are out that early.
Alternative is to spend the last night at an airport hotel which has a shuttle to the terminal.

I agree with the last poster. If your flight is early such as 9 am or earlier I say stay at an airport hotel with shuttle.
Its not public....you need to ask the counter but many indie hotels do have contracts with an airport shuttle mini van.
When I stayed at a hotel near Chinatown area/market st area I was around $16 pp to get to SFO

There is no reason to stay in some uninteresting office park near the airport when there will be no traffic from downtown at all at that time - 15-20 minutes by taxi, tops. You can pre-book a taxi, talk to your hotel concierge to pre-book a car, pre-book Super Shuttle (which may eliminate most of the time savings of having no traffic), or try for an Uber. The longest wait I've ever seen for Uber is 17 minutes (on a Sunday night) - I doubt getting to the airport will be an issue at all.

Would the SAMTRANS KX route work? Just not sure what the holiday schedule there is. Same as weekends?

Kinda - But, OP isn't worried about the time/traffic. He knows it's a straight shot in a cab. He's concerned about cost.

That's my reason for posting. Never would have found the KX route. I'm going to reserve one of the shared vans, I think. Thanks for the suggestions.

I doubt Uber would be $10 less than a cab, unless you going to/from far north S.F.
