Starwood Preferred Guest - SPG AMEX - referral credit if I close card?

My wife referred me for a SPG AMEX about 10 days ago (no referral bonus received yet). We were looking into canceling her card, but wasn't sure if she would get the referral is the account was closed? (The annual fee was just charged - we don't need 2 cards so I'm closing hers).

What kind of turnaround time are people seeing on get the 5K bonus?

I cannot speak to SPG but I referred someone for a PRG. I did not get the bonus and after about a month I wrote to Amex, after I provided the name of the referee, they credited the bonus within a couple days. Maybe you should contact them from your wife's account and give them your name, to speed up the process.

in my experience you will not get the referral bonus if your account is closed at the time they would have awarded it. i fell into that trap a few years ago. my suggestion would be keep your card open until the points post (through nudging amex or just waiting) and then close the card after. they will usually pro-rate the annual fee based on when you close it (or maybe that is just for the PRG / Plat) so you may save some $ yet.
