Emirates Skywards - Can I upgrade one leg?
I have paid cash for a business class seat LIS-DXB-BNE. I want to upgrade using cash to fly the DXB-BNE leg first class. The LIS-DXB leg is not in suites, and there is no lounge in Lisbon, so I don't think it's worthwhile to upgrade that leg.
I've rung my local office, who claim that I can't upgrade only one half of the ticket using cash, I can only use FF miles (which I don't have any of).
Does that seem right? Why would Emirates say no to real money, but yes to miles?

That is about right. It's just how the fare for your trip is constructed, it's made out of 2 components: outbound and inbound.
You could upgrade either (or both) but not segments within.
Having said that and by looking at the LIS-BNE fares, upgrading the outbound or the inbound should set you back about $2k-2.5k US, depending on how much you paid for your business class ticket.
Will be 2000 euro. Won't pass the wife test!
You can always try at the airport. I got man to dxb y to j for 320'plus tax so 400 gbp.
I'd like to go j to f cor one leg when I go to Vietnam (the man dxb 777 route that has suites) as it is my honeymoon.

Do you have a skywards membership? If so you can buy the skywards miles and then use it to upgrade that leg. From your post it looks as if you dont have any status with emirates. If you have a friend/family member who has a skywards account with miles you can ask them to upgrade the ticket for you.Even if they have to buy some miles it might be cheaper than cash.
LIS-DXB-BNE costs 62500 miles and DXB-BNE costs 45000 miles for upgrading from a flex business to first.
You will earn 31500 miles as a skywards blue ( lowest tier) for the LIS-DXB-BNE return in flex J for the ticket that you paid for.
Do not try to transfer miles from one account to another as there is a transfer fee.

Not possible, ajv23 would need 52.5k skywards miles to upgrade from J flex to F.
It might work out worthwhile to upgrade the whole LIS-BNE trip anyway. The cost will be marginally is any between that and just DXB-BNE
