I got an op-up to C on my recent flight from FRA to ICN. It was a very pleasant surprise, even though I did tick a lot of the boxes (there was a huge line of tour groups returning home at the economy counter, I was the second person to get to the counter, and am able-bodied and thus can be seated in an exit row).

Overall, I really liked the experience, even if exit row is not exactly a perk in OZ's 747-400 C class (leg room not an issue to begin with, much smaller screen).

One thing puzzled me though, I was offered a choice of main courses, and it never arrived. I have heard that there is a distinction between C class seating and C class service, but I'm somewhat confused, as I got all the other courses of the C class menu, and didn't get any main course at all. Did they just forget or is that not included in an op-up?

I'm not complaining, as I'm not about to take an op-up for granted and didn't go hungry by any means - just curious.

I've received lots of op-ups and never came across this situation. I think almost certainly the FA just forgot. I've always received a C meal on op-ups, but could foresee some situation where they might not have enough C meals and so give an op-up passenger a Y meal. Perhaps that was the case and the FA forgot to retrieve a meal from Y for you. You really should have said something, but perhaps were too timid being you were on the receiving end of the op-up.

Now I have been seated in a C cabin but for which there were no C passengers (the C passengers were upgraded to the F cabin). In that case, it's not an op-up, and the service/meal is just Y, but you still do get a meal. In this case your boarding pass will still be a Y boarding pass (for ex-ICN, a gray color background rather than the blue color background for C). If it's a real op-up, you should receive a C boarding pass. I did once see where a woman was seated in Y, and for some reason the OZ airport manager came onboard and crossed out her seat number, changed it to the C seat next to me, and told the flight manager she was being upgraded. I have no idea what the reason for her upgrade was, but evidently it wasn't an op-up. The FA's served her a C meal in that case also.

Ah ok, good to know. So looking forward to the meal next time, whenever that is. And yeah, my boarding pass read CH, H having been my original booking fare.

BTW, I suspect a lot of people here have had business taking them from ICN to (or via) FRA and reverse. In your experience, when have you usually been given op-ups? I'm still very new to the whole status thing, and quite thrilled to have received one so early. I'm putting most of my luck down to it being summer, with lots of passengers in coach, but would of course love to hear about any other experiences.

In almost all situations, OZ only gives op-ups if there's more passengers wanting to travel in a certain class than they have seats for, and there are seats available in a higher class. Once the situation exists to need to op-up some passengers, priority is given based on status. Meaning first OZ Platinum, then Diamond Plus, then Diamond, then Gold. I'm not sure if *A status comes into play and where. I'd say you got fairly lucky getting an op-up being only Diamond. I'm Diamond Plus and several times saw some passengers getting upgraded, but I wasn't, due to likely the others having paid a higher booking class than my ticket. You certainly shouldn't expect it very often at your status level, but I don't really have experience on the ICN-FRA route to comment specifically about the op-up situation there vs. other routes.

Thanks for your insights; I figured I'd gotten very lucky. I'll just hang in there and slowly work my way up to higher status then.

No mate, they should have served you a decent meal.

Once onboard you get to enjoy every part of C, unless you were told that you don't get meal before.

This should never happen for a long haul flight!
