I'm an SL with BN 1 in both MNL to HKG, then HKG to HND. and got a very rare jockpot of 2 upgrades in a day for a lowly SL. I'm only been upgraded 4X in my lifetime and 2 came in today.
I took the same route last year as an SL but was not upgraded. Now the aircraft was even bigger goin to HND, a 74A vs 77D last year but still got upgraded.
Perhaps both Manila and Tokyo is peak travel season now coz of the 4 day weekend in Manila so an exodus of travelers, and the end of ubon holidays in japan so many are returning back to Tokyo.
It started in Manila when I asked if they were oversold, to my shock, Cathay oversold Y by 27 people!! Are they kidding? I was told that I have good chances but since J is oversold also, this might kill my chances. so just ask the lounge attendant later.
So I went to the lounge.. first no upgrade yet when I asked, then I went out of the lounge to walk around, and when I went back, I was immediately called by the attendant and handed the J boarding pass.
My 2nd upgrade from HK to HND in the same day comes after a wierd series of aircraft change starting from 74A, then 74K, then back to 74A in just a few hours... does CX having a hard time deciding on what aircraft to use?.. and 4 boarding pass changes until the last minute.
so when I landed in HK, the ground staff has a sign with my name on it. when I approached her, she asked for my boarding pass. first I thought another J upgrade.. but she said no just a seat change in Y due to an aircraft change. From 44J, I was moved to 48J due to the aircraft change from 74A to 74K.
the an hour later at the Wing, my name was called and asked for my boarding pass, again I thought J upgrade, but still economy but this time 30E. this is my 3rd boarding pass..I was beginning to question why they moved me away from my extra leg room seat, the attendant, seemingly unaware that it is called premium economy, assured me it is a better seat than the emergency exit.
It is when I went to the cabin and asked why 30E is a better seat, the more knowledgable attendant said it was a premium economy seat.
so fastforwarding to the end, as they swiped my premium economy at the boarding gate, the red light went out.. I said, now what? a 4th one? .. and true enough, the whipped out a J boarding pass.. finally!!!!!
When I boarded, expecting the new business class seat similar to my upgrade earlier from MNL to HK.. I found the older seat of 74A...
It was then I realized that there is another aircraft change in the last minute back to 74A.. no premium economy, so J instead!!
This proves that BN 1 is real!! It did helped me get a rare 2 upgrades in a day as a lowly SL coz I got BN 1 on both flights..
That HK to HND is so far the best J experience in my life... as somehow the service level of the crew was perfect. I got upgraded before in a long haul flight but this 4 hour flight is so much better..
Maybe the crew was extra motivated as CX was just voted best in J by Skytrax?
