Before I attempt to hit the phone to Virgin reservations, I thought I might ask if this is do-able on VA.
I know I can book a VA ticket from SYD to JFK via LAX but what I would like to do is return on Hawaiian Airlines flying JFK-HNL stopping over before flying HNL-SYD.
My question is, can I do this as a return ticket booked wholey with VA or woud I be forced into buying two one-way tickets, one booked with VA and the other booked with HI? Anyone tried this before?

You cannot book hawaiian with Virgin and you'll prob find cheaper the one way price if you buy from the States, so two one ways!
However do check with Delta as you may be able to with them the whole trip and credit back to Velocity.
HA doesn't offer decent one-way fares between Australia and HNL directly from its web site. However, a few years ago, I was able to purchase, over the phone, a one-way HNL-SYD on HA which was only a few $$ more than what JQ offered for the same date, in other words, cheap.
I purchased it from an HNL travel agent/consolidator, which I found by using the online pages in the Honolulu Advertiser (the main newspaper). Usually the Sunday paper has extensive travel ads in the travel section. I don't have the name of the travel agency anymore (and who knows if they're still in business anyway), and I don't know if HA still sells seats to consolidators, though. If someone tries this strategy, I'd be grateful if they could report the results here.

Well I made the phone call to VA and they said they can only sell me the HNL-SYD sector but not JFK-HNL.
VA said they are not allowed to sell domestic US flights with their partners. I even asked about doing JFK-LAS-SYD (stopping over in LAS) with VX & VA but again for the same reasons, they couldn't sell me a domestic ticket.
As the OP to this thread, I would like to add a postscript.
I ended up calling my friendly travel agent. She put together the following itinerary for me with all flights booked in business class:
SYD-LAX on VA
LAX-JFK on DL but with a VA flight #
JFK-LAX on DL
LAX-HNL on DL
HNL-SYD on HA but with a VA flight #
The ticket was purchased and issued with VA and the cost was slightly less than if I'd purchased on the VA web site a return business class ticket to NY.
I guess it just goes to show that there are occasions where a TA can do things that you can't do yourself online.
