Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer - Economy catering decline?

I am flying LHR SYD in a few weeks, never flown on SQ before so am generally intrigued as to whether it will in fact be any better than what I am used to long haul (which in recent years has been a mixture of BA and North American carriers).
Anyway quite a few of the recent Skytrax reviews seem to suggest the food in economy (which is actually something that as far as it goes in airline food terms I was quite looking forward to try) has gone downhill recently - just wondering if that's been the experience of people in this forum?
I'll definitely update on my return in any case....
Not that i have noticed, but to be fair i will eat most things. I have however noticed that they dont fill me up like they used to.

They've been cutting costs, but catering is still pretty decent. But heck, you don't fly Y to eat.

Generally speaking that's of course perfectly true but then I've been hearing for years about SQ's great Y product and how the catering is one of the highlights of that so it just seems a pity that when I do finally get round to trying it, it sounds like it's not going to be what it once was... ( mind you as I have not tried it I don't really have a reference point).
They have a great (I think good, not great) Y product but I never thought their catering was something to look forward to. Even at its best it is still airline Y catering. Not horrible but nothing to shout about. It definitely has gone down in the past years IMO. So instead of just only being slightly better than the industry standard, they're now barely better.
Not surprised at all with poor inedible foods. :td:
flew from SIN to -PVG, -HKG, -TPE, -BKK routes all foods served were terrible that me and my wife stopped eating half way thru. Stopped flying with SQ.

This might sound silly, but it could help if enough folk complained, I imagine its harder to put things under the rug when there is an uptick in complaints.
I've had some poor food on some flights too but also have had good luck with some of the special meals, so if that suits you might want to try that.

I wouldn't say Y food is that bad. There have even been a couple of times when I thought that it wouldn't have been too bad plated up and served in business class. A couple of observations I've made:
- Western food selection tends to be better than Asian selection (unless a Thai dish), but maybe that's something to do with the general "fish" type flavours often used in the Asian menu that I don't particularly like
- Shorter haul (eg BKK/CGK/MNL-SIN etc) seems to better than longer haul - maybe less time from cooking to serving?

While ugly in presentation and usually kept at two choices only, the food quality has still been ok for me. And I dislike SQ as a whole ... so it must still be quite decent.
Especially when compared to SQ's ugly daughter SinkAir which I was forced to fly once again recently. That politically correct, smallest-thinkable-common-cultural-denominator 'stew' offered there makes JetStar's chicken-flavoured-something look edible in comparison.

I haven't had a standard SQ Meal in some years now opting for medical reasons to switch to things like Seafood or Lactose Intolerance so can't say too much but a lot of it depends on the Catering Station.Out of Singapore and All of Asia It's pretty good.I am from Adelaide so It's currently Qantas who do our catering service but that may soon change It might still be great or the food if you are unfortunate will resemble a Virgin Australia Tuck Shop Type Menu.

i am always happy when I get ice cream when flying economy...and SQ serves good ice cream there.
Food wise does not really interest me that much when I am flying economy. Like toyotaboy95 rightfully says, one does not fly Y to eat...:)

They indeed did ... but that would be my main grievance: the quality and selection of the ice cream cone has been dramatically decreased :( .

Not noticed it, recently on a BNE flight it was a cadburys one, a flake i think.

I got Magnums recently, I cant complain really.
I got good and bad ones over the last few month, but I must admit it has more to do with my personal preferences rather than the quality.

I was also very happy with the Hug and Dance...:) handed out the last time I flew economy in SQ.
Although I must concede that it was a little too frozen for my liking and was handed out like feeding time in the zoo. But for Haagen Daaz ice cream, my ego has to unfortunate take second place.

SQ's catering is still one of the more generous in economy when compared to the likes of BA or AA for example. But for asian carriers, its portions have gotten a tad smaller when compared to a few years ago.
For better catering, try the likes of QR or TG for example.

A Magnum is indeed a quality brand ... jealous.

Yes that is good too.
But the last two time, I too got the Cadbury .. and a cookies & something for that matter ... if it was at least a plain flavour :( .

I wouldn't hold up TG as a shining beacon for catering. I find on the SIN-BKK route, SQ has better catering. YMMV. But I'd argue that TG is not a clear winner.
