hi everyone,
i'm trying to figure out how to best use miles for some trips in asia and would greatly appreciate any recommendations from all you experts :) we're trying to do a family trip (bangkok, angkor wat) but the parents are also going on side trips to make things complicated, and all 4 of us will be on slightly different itineraries :p
the most complicated itinerary, all on separate days will be:
EWR-HKG
HKG-TPE
TPE-BKK
BKK-REP
REP-TPE
TPE-KIX
KIX-TPE
TPE-EWR
unfortunately in order to coordinate plans with scheduled meetings the only flights that can be modified are TPE-BKK, BKK-REP, REP-TPE (family vacation, order/flights can be changed) and EWR-HKG (can change to EWR-TPE, TPE-HKG) i tried to stick with non stop flights whenever possible since we dont have too much time to waste on traveling, and the one flight i'm really not thrillled about is REP-ICN-TPE which will be almost 12 hrs :(
the best use of miles/cash i could come up with was:
united
UA EWR-SFO-HKG (stopover, open jaw)
OZ REP-ICN-TPE (destination)
UA? TPE-EWR
65K miles + $85
cathay #1
HKG-TPE
4.5K miles+ $80?
cathay #2
TPE-KIX
KIX-TPE
30K miles+ $120? for business only
thai:
TPE-BKK
15K miles + $10
bangkok air:
BKK-REP
$235 (ouch!)
i'd love to combine HKG-TPE, TPE-KIX, and KIX-TPE to one ticket but i dont think the oneworld rules would allow it.
2 of us will likely fly some variation of:

cash vs miles
thai:
TPE-BKK
15K miles + $10
bangkok air:
BKK-REP
$235
asiana
REP-ICN-TPE
15K miles + $34
i tried combining TPE-BKK, BKK-REP, and REP-TPE on united's website but i couldn't book the BKK-REP segment since bangkok air is not a partner airline. oneworld doesnt seem to go to cambodia. sky team doesnt seem to go from REP to TPE any faster than asiana does.
once the flights are settled i'll try to send the parents in business so they dont have to suffer with the rest of us and to increase our odds of all fitting on the same flights on award travel :)
