Looking to get 4 nights at no charge. Plan on opening up a Hhonors card which comes with 50,000 points, gold status, and 2 weekend nights for me and my wife. If I understand this properly I can use my two weekend nights for my stay and use my 50,000 miles for one additional night and my wife's 50,000 points for the last night.
Is this the best plan?

The Hilton Reserve card comes with 2 free weekend nights, and gold status (free breakfast and internet!), but doesn't give you 50,000 points as well.
You could get the Hilton Reserve card just for the Gold status which will save you money on breakfast and internet.
If you can use the weekend nights, you will need 2 extra nights which will cost 100K total or 50K each night.
You can only get 2 Citi personal cards within 65 days, so you could get 1 Citi Hilton card for 50K points (assuming you got the Citi Reserve card) and the AMEX Hilton card for another 50K points.
Alternatively, you could get 2 Citi Hilton cards for 50K & the AMEX Surpass card which offers Gold status for the 1st year and 60K points. You could then book an AXON award for 4 nights for 145K points.

Thanks. If I use the two night free tan I don't think I need the Axon award. Is it the HA card for 35,000 that transfers to Hilton at 2x? I guess the question is should I go for the Axon award or the two free night plus points?

Why wouldn't you. Get the ha x2 ,citi honors reserve. Then you would have enough for six nights. 2 weekend nights plus an axon. Since you need to spend 2500 to get your 2 weekend nights you would have 147500 hh points and two weekend nights. Tack on another cities honors card for 50k and then you have a free week.

I only need the 4 nights as I have a 10 night Paul Gauguin cruise after and then six nights on Rangiora at the Kia Ora. I would prefer he minimum number of cards as I have obtained a quantity during the past year.

Then just get the ha ones x2. That gives you 140 and you could buy 5k honors points for around $50 and get your award. Or put an additional 3k spend on the ha cards before transferring to Hilton as they only let you transfer in multiples of 5k ha miles.

You need the AMEX Hilton card to be able to book the AXON awards, so you'd need 2 Hawaiian Airline cards and the AMEX cards.
And don't forget the savings on internet and breakfast if you have gold status.

Hence why I said HA x2.

Don't forget to budget some significant money for the Air Tahiti flights to Bora Bora and Rangiroa.

JDiver,
How were the flights on the ATR 42's on Air Tahiti? Uncomfortable seats? No worse than a dash-8 here in the states?

Now that I am back... no worse or better than a Dash-8 or ATR anywhere.

Used my AA miles for two business class seats JFK-PPT. Used Chase Sapphire pay yourself back feature for the cost on the inter island flight to Rangiora. Opened 2 HA cards and the one HHonirs card. Transferred the HA miles at 2 HH points for each mile and got an AXON award on Moorea for my 4 nights. Contacted the Hotel and with my gold status they upgraded us from a standard garden to a deluxe garden room. Then they offered an upgrade to an overwater unit for about $125 a night which we took.
After Moorea we are on a 10 night Paul Gauguin cruise. Had a $1000 per person voucher due to issues on our last PG cruise, plus $1300 per person credit for not using their air plus $300 per person credit for referring three other couples = $2600 off the approximate $$4995 per person fare so the cruise is costing us $2400 per person for the 10 nights.
We then will blow a lot of these savings at the Kia Ora in an overwater bungalow for six nights (pay for 2 get 1 night free).
I love this site. BTW, with planning 18 months in advance it would be easy, for less than $1000 per person, to do 4 nights on Moorea and 4 on Bora Bora at the Hilton, all totaled (except for food-breakfast free) including air from anywhere in the states.

Good call on the upgrade. My wife and I did 6 nights on points there last May and decided not to pay for the upgrade in advance. Instead, we spent 4 nights in the deluxe garden room (upgraded for free) and then inquired about moving for our last two nights. Fortunately, they had one overwater bungalow left and offered it for something like $100/night, and we were VERY glad we took it. This property is one of the best uses of Hilton points around.

Goodonya, and thanks for sharing! You are now a FlyerTalk Diamond... ;)
(Hope you dive - the pass dives at Rangiroa are truly memorable!)

I do dive which is one of the reasons we chose Rangiora. I plan on a few dives on Moorea and then some more on Rangiora.
