Terms & Conditions
One Free Rental Day will be awarded for every two qualifying rentals made after the date on which the member has registered and which occur between August 20, 2012, and January 31, 2013. Credit will not be given for rentals made prior to a member's registration date. A qualifying rental is the paid rental, via the Emerald Club®, of a Midsize or larger vehicle at participating National Car Rental locations in the 50 United States, including the District of Columbia, for a period of two or more consecutive days during the promotion.

Earned Free Rental Day fulfillment will begin on September 10, 2012, (solely by email to the email address provided at the time of registration) and thereafter will occur within 1–2 weeks after the second qualifying rental. To redeem a Free Rental Day, visit emeraldclubpromos.com/12Free/2012 to view your free day certificates, click redeem and then rent a Compact through Fullsize car starting after September 10, 2012, and before June 16, 2013. To take advantage of this offer, make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. No more than three Free Rental Days may be redeemed toward one rental of three or more days. Unfortunately, we cannot combine this offer with any other discount and cannot apply the offer to a previous or existing reservation. All standard rental qualifications apply. Be aware that taxes, surcharges, recovery and recoupment fees and other charges may apply, and that optional products and services (such as damage waiver and additional driver fees) are extra charges. Please check your auto insurance policy and/or credit card agreement for rental vehicle coverage. The availability of this offer is limited to participating U.S. locations and is subject to change without notice. Blackout dates may also apply. We cannot accept the coupon if it has been purchased, bartered or sold for cash.

Referrers of friends and colleagues through our email form and social media links will earn a maximum of ten Free Rental Days, regardless of how many friends and colleagues enroll. In order to receive credit, referred friends and colleagues must use the email address provided by the referring party at time of enrollment and conduct a rental by January 31, 2013.

To be eligible for the complimentary credit toward a Free Rental Day, you must electively opt in to receive emails from National. Offer expires January 31, 2013, and is valid for new opt–ins only.

They apparently have the same type of referral bonus as last year- if you refer someone who rents, get a free day. There is not yet a mention of the max number of such bonus days.

They seem to have reduced the redemption period from the last week in June, typically around the 24th, to the 15th. I guess too many people redeemed for expensive one-ways in the first week of the summer peak (right after k-12 students get out).

I disagree with this interpretation. It says RENTALS made after reg date and August 20th, not RESERVATIONS made after reg date.

It seems to me it doesn't matter when it was booked just when the physical rental takes place, I don't think re-reserving is needed.

ctuttle
Aug 16, 12, 9:03 pm
I also read it to mean the rentals count only after registration, not when the reservation was made, and like most promotions you have to register prior to the start of the rental.

I think it is probably one of, if not the best of the rental car promotions. Only real drawback is in the past you could only use up to three of these days at a time, and you couldn't use them with one of your regular free days. They also have the coupon codes for the free days in a different location than your other free days, so you do have to pay a bit more attention to redeem. However the little extra work offsets the benefits of the extra free days.

Excellent promotion, and I tend to reward National for it for extra business during the promotion period. Also seem to remember last year they extended the earning period a bit after the promotion started.

Yeah, that's what is confusing. "Rentals made" suggests that they are talking about the actual taking possession of the car, but so many people on here equate that the "reservations made" which means something entirely different.

I ended up just cancelling and re-booking - it was only three and one of them had a pretty big rate decrease so in the end it was all good.

According to the T&C's, you have to rent "a Midsize or larger vehicle" to have a qualifying rental. What happens if you use an upgrade coupon on a reservation to get to the proper car class?

For example, I have a reservation where I'm using a double upgrade coupon and selecting a Compact car which results in my reservation being for a Standard car. Would this be considered the rental of a Compact car (which would not qualify) or of a Standard car (which would qualify)?

powermax
Aug 17, 12, 6:25 pm
I know that if you are an emerald club member and you use an upgrade coupon from a compact to a mid size it doesn't qualify as a mid size to use the emerald aisle. I think it doesn't qualify to the promotion as well but I'm no sure.

I would assume a "paid rental...of a Midsize or larger vehicle" would refer to the class charged, not the class driven. It's consistent with the Exec benefits, as well (guaranteed upgrades on rates >= ICAR).

Yes. The best use of free days is for the most expensive one-ways out of the most expensive cities. Especially out of a NYC airport, where the one-way rates to smaller markets are usually high, and NY CDW is $9.

Per my understanding and experience from the past couple of years, it has nothing to do with referring friends to "Emerald Club", you have to refer them to the "ONE TWO FREE" program. correct me if I’m wrong.

Can anybody from past years of this promotion verify what counts as a 1 2 Free?

Say I have an 8-day rental. We know that outside of the promotion if my reward choice is Rental Credits an 8-day rental would count as 2 credits earned (in other words 2/7 of the way to a free day). But it seems like the 8-day rental only counts as 1 rental re 1 2 Free (in other words 1/2 of the way to a [1 2] Free day). Is that correct? Has that been verified by actual past experience?

Thanks!

Americanada
Aug 27, 12, 8:16 pm
Any credit earned under the 1-2-Free program is in addition to benefits under the Natl reward program.

In other words (using your own logic); for an 8-day rental, the benefits you would earn would be 2/7ths of your way to a free rental day and 1/2 of your way to another free rental day. [The free rental day earned under the regular Emerald program is more valuable than the rental day earned under the 1-2-Free promo].

Anyone care to break the tie? :D

Just so I am clear, my scenario is thus: if I refer my wife, Dad, friend etc. who I had join EC and rent during the last promo cycle to get the referral credit, can I refer those now-EC-enrolled people to this year's promo and get credit again, or do I need "fresh meat" to join EC?

The referral free days are for new EC members, not for Registering for the 1-2-Free promo. If that were the case, wouldn't everyone here "refer" each other to register for the promo and bank some free days. Also, why in the world would National give you bonus free days simply for referring existing customers to a program that gives them bonus free days?

If you log in, the referral link takes you to an EC registration page not a 1-2-Free page.

Also, why in the world would National give you bonus free days simply for referring existing customers to a program that gives them bonus free days?

In the same matter you can ask why in the world would National run a program that gives away bonus free days? The answer to both is: marketing. I guess National sees a huge increase in rentals during this promotion period.

This seems like a grey area. Can anybody point me to a T&C sentence or something, maybe in a previous year's T&Cs even, that discusses how long duration rentals would count as more than the minimum (i.e. we do know that a minimum 2-day rental, then another 2-day rental, will earn one free day -- what about a 7-day rental and what about a 30-day rental?)

Specifically for Ritz: Are you saying your 30-day rental earned you 2 free days or 4 free days?

Can anybody point me to a T&C sentence or something, maybe in a previous year's T&Cs even, that discusses how long duration rentals would count as more than the minimum (i.e. we do know that a minimum 2-day rental, then another 2-day rental, will earn one free day -- what about a 7-day rental and what about a 30-day rental?)

Specifically for Ritz: Are you saying your 30-day rental earned you 2 free days or 4 free days?

It is not listed in the Terms and Conditions, but I know I receive 3 free days per 30 day rental. It was 4 about 2 years ago.

Who did you talk to? I went through National customer service online to see why I wasn't receiving 4 days for each 30 day rental and I was told that each monthly rental is treated as 1 rental and would take two months to earn 1 free day.

I spoke to VIP reservations (its a specfic number that was given to me), they then conferenced in a CS supervisor who applied the missing free days.

Specifically for Ritz: Are you saying your 30-day rental earned you 2 free days or 4 free days?

I earn at a rate of 1 free day per week, which ends up being 4 free days per 30 day rental. They are deposited automatically. I had to contact them due to no days being a applied for August, as my re-up occurred prior to the start of the promo period. They then manually applied the days to my account.

Thanks for the response. They were not even were going give me one free day for my monthly rental. I finally got someone who told me that it was 3 free days for a monthly rental instead of 4. My monthly re-up fell on 8/28, but they would not give me credit for it since it started before the promotion date.

I was just worried that when he goes to rent the car they will ask for coupon or deny the free day and he will have to pay the high rental fee (its a 1 way)

The mobile app and website just showed my total days earned has dropped from 10 to 7... anyone else have this issue? I'm trying to figure out if I have some unused missing. I thought it was supposed to show a running total of earned days for the entire promo (it had been so far). It's showing a total of four unused and three used. I've been using them, but can't remember if the unused total is correct.

Just talked to a National rep about a rental that didn't post for a free day for this promo. She said that in order for a rental to qualify for this promotion, it has to be rented for at least 42 hours. So if you rent a car say Friday night at 10PM, and return it Sunday at Noon, that's only 38 hours and even though you would pay for 2 days for anything over 24 hours, it does not count for the promotion unless the car is physically out for a minimum of 42 hours. Can anyone else confirm this?

One of my August rentals was for 41 hours and 16 minutes, and the one before was 48 hours. Neither showed up. I called and the agent told me the system was showing them as 1 day rentals. Can't remember what I said other than the receipt and billing both indicated both were 2 days each, but the agent was quick and helpful in making sure both were credited.

So my advice is to call again, get a different agent, and eventually they'll credit you. Good luck!

Much agreed. if you don't see the credit, definitely call in as that usually does it. Most CSRs IME are more than happy to apply the missing credit manually.

That's weird, I have had a couple sub-42 hr two day rentals and got credit for them. Only quirk is that my location backdated the return because I return after hours. I rented at 4pm on Friday and returned after hours on Sunday. They check it in at 9am on Monday but backdate it to Sunday so the rental receipt shows drop off on Sunday at 9am which is less than 42 hrs but I still got credit. It shows a 2-day charge.

I've been renting from National non-stop for months. I'm exhausted of having to turn the car in each week and re-rent, especially since a 7-day rental period means I only earn 1 credit (if I keep it an entire month, I'll get 7 credits, not 4 or 5).

Is there any way I can take advantage of one-two-free without frequent trips to the airport? Whilst I love the staff at my station, and we seem to be on a first-name basis, I'm sure they're growing tired of seeing me as well!

I've used a 1-2 Free bonus day LGA-PWM. It looks something like this:

Full Size
Contract ID Emerald Club Members
1 day @ $243/day
Unlimited Free Miles Included
EA Off 2010 -$214
EC Discount -$29
Subtotal $0
NY CDW $9
Total $9

The only exception is if you usually use a flat rate corporate code that has a mileage charge on one-ways. Don't forget to change it to the generic Emerald Club ID. Otherwise, your daily rate will be free, but you will pay a one-way fee.

WHen I dropped my car off at National last night, I spoke with one of the agents, and he confirmed that I'll just pay the tax on the car, now which tax do I pay (I forgot to ask this) so I pay the tax in SAN (where I am picking up the car) or in PHX (where I'm dropping it off)?

No. The coupons are explicit, but - IME most airport location let you self-upgrade to at least a car class or 2 higher than Full Size with free days (and many in this forum will tell you even higher than that) without worry.

Unfortunately, I'm just a regular Emerald Club member (just missed Executive), so not sure how much I can bump myself up. May just have to take my chances with the Aisle and see what happens.

I've heard stories where folks on one-way rentals have gotten big upgrades when taking cars back to their home states, so maybe I'll search the lot for some destination plates.

Ended up stopping at the booth on the lot and told I could take pretty much anything with no upcharge ^:D Of course, there was pretty much nothing unusual or noteworthy worth taking so ended up in a fully loaded 300.

But after driving about 20 minutes, car started emitting really bad odor and also noticed that vehicle was filthy inside (sticky residue on seats, armrests, etc). Didn't notice the dirt onsite since the lot was so dark. Was driving past BWI so pulled in there, swapped out for a much better (and way cleaner!) Buick Lacrosse. And the folks at BWI couldn't have been nicer about it.

I actually received credit for a rental that STARTED and ended after 1/31/13. My last 1-2-Free posted on 2/14/13 after a four day rental from SNA 2/8-2/12. Don't ask me how it happened. But that made for 14 free days earned! :D

Also, it's worth noting that 1-2-Free day coupons used for a one day rental give National earned free day rental credits. So my 14 1-2-Free days will earn me almost three more National free days.

Not possible. Only way is to book 2 separate reservations but unless you get a cooperative agent/manager at the location you'll have to go back to switch contracts / cars.
