i need to get 13000 aeroplan miles (UA. AA or other star alliance member would be ok also). not looking to spend alot as its my first run.

SEA-SJU on US is still out there for as low as $314 RT ai through October, and quite a few under $400. There's even some same-days if you dig a bit, but often it's an overnight in San Juan. Dang.
Routing through SFO/PHX *and* PHL each way maximizes the miles to over 9k.
Be sure to check on the mileage earning before you book, though.

Hi - I am going to try this in First - it is about $1,000 - as I need A LOT of miles for my LH Senator. A quick question - how do I work out the miles - you mention to over 9k. I think for LH M&M US first in A, or F is 3* distance miles.
